I know this comment is hella old, but filler means it wasn't in the manga, that's it that's the only metric to judge it. The episode could be good or bad, but none of the information learned in it is real, like if you like to theorize and make guesses or make connections about things in the show and you start using info from fillers, you'll get all messed up from contradictions that don't make sense. For example there's filler where Zoro cuts steal before the Mr 1 fight, there's filler where Chopper uses rumble balls without any downsides, there's filler where they find a poneglyph that doesn't exist afterwards, etc

I had no idea when I watched this the first time and actually really liked the interactions between him and the crew. It just sucks he leaves so abruptly and seems out of character since he was leaving potentially thousands of people to die.

Same! I mean the majority of it definitely is 'filler' as its all just an anime only excuse to show us more time with Ace before he had to go, but as long as they know that there was a moment where he gives Luffy a piece of paper and explains it'll help them meet again that's the most important bit. But they'll catch a flashback of that moment when the time comes anyway.

This is why I say a lot of 'filler' eps in one piece are actually harmless, especially when you know they'll blend in canon content with the beginning or end of an ep. I'd rather they just watch it. We know they'll enjoy it anyways and at the rate we're going we'll blow past it. Only things that are like skippable filler to me are when they did anime crossovers that have nothing to do with the world or 'boss luffy' when they're little standalone feudal japan stories with the crew. And I say that being quite fond of the boss luffy eps.

I mean how does one judge what is filler? What may be considered filler could be a really solid episode that goes more into the characters than the main episodes. I don't just want action all the time either.

The part where Ace comes with them into the desert is actually filler. In the manga he leaves after blasting the Baroque Works ships.

Just in case y’all don’t watch those episodes u skipped. Ace finds out he was tricked into coming to alabasta. A bounty hunter trying to capture Ace was spreading rumors that Blackbeard was in alabasta knowing Ace was looking for him. They “fight”. There’s an emotional moment between the bounty hunter and his kids and after everything is over Ace leaves because he has no more business in the country. Before he leaves he gives Luffy that paper.

becasue you skipped the filler (i don't mind) you missed the initial scene of ace giving luffy the paper at the end of the last episode. pretty important but there'll be flashbacks trust me. or you could jsut go back and watch the end of the previous episode just to see how it went down
