Ya, its not good or bad, just what the show chose to do. It's nice that it makes you put puzzle pieces together and part of why its a classic, but the consequence of that is cool plot details could end up getting missed completely. I didn't think to connect those dots on my first watch :/. Given the episodic nature of the series, it's not obvious there was a puzzle to put together in the first place.

This is exactly why Bebop is one of my favorites. Alot of episodes are tied together but in subtle ways.

The show isint spoon feeding and letting viewers connect the dots themselves. All the info is there you just have to think and not just stare expecting the show to explain everything multiple times like alot of anime tend to over do.

The show doesn't do a good job of connecting the dots, but the defect in the gate caused it to explode. In episode 6 with the immortal harmonica devil kid, his condition was caused by that explosion. That explosion is why there are rock showers like when we first met Ed. It also explains something in future episodes that I won't spoil.
