The more messed up they get, and the harder they push themselves, the more their spirit energy grows after they've had time to recover. It's like they're expanding their overall capacity for spirit each time by pushing themselves beyond their limits, then that becomes their new maximum. Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely a "Humans are awesome!!" series.
