Hunter x hunter does a great job of showing that no one is totally good and totally bad and that's why the characters are so relatable and powerful to the viewer. Most shonen anime have a main character who lacks depth and fights for good against bad guys. But as you saw the change to evil in Gon, shown through his childish view on morality and his growth into a more vicious beast, contradicting his previous stance against Chrollo, asking how he could kill innocent people, to using Komugi as a hostage. Stating he would kill her if Pitou delayed him for even a second. You have the change from Meruem being omnipotent reflecting Gons change, becoming more human and valuing what is really important in life. The anime does a very good job of showing to the viewer that the anime is focused on people. Never truly good and never truly good. Just people living out their lives in the way they want to. There's been indications and foreshadowing to this all the way through the anime which is what is so masterful about the anime. If you get the chance, even if it is off camera. Watch these videos. They go through and break down the complexity and imagery between Meruem and Gon, and Meruem and Komugi's relationship. Pouf died alone. He had the best intentions for the Chimera ants but ended up dying all by himself. Meruem is the best antagonist in anime and Meruem and Komugi is the best love story. HxH best show
