Winter Cabin - Part V (9 of 9)

It turned out that Gerald Sinclair had not forgotten their encounter from last year. He had laid that trap so carefully, and lured Dawn Meadows, so unwittingly into it. He only hadn't accounted for the unexpected variable of the appearance of her spirited cousin, fellow reporter, Rebecca Lillian Carter.

But Gerald Sinclair had been a patient man. He had been all these years. He had to. Dawn Meadows was an annoyingly consistent foil. She had been since she was a teenage girl. And that foil had cost Gerald Sinclair years, and untold sums of money.

Fortunately for Sinclair, the only thing Dawn Meadows was, more than tenacious, was that she was a naive, trusting, fool of a girl. She so conveniently whisked herself and her motor mouth cousin to this remote Winter Cabin for a cozy celebration, and didn't even think twice about letting in his man, who propped up nothing more than a paper thin cover story.

Sometimes Sinclair wondered how Dawn had ever caused him as much trouble as she had. But he knew. He knew, even as he rubbed his hand through her silky blonde hair as she lay draped across the table before him. He knew that even though this meddlesome brat couldn't manage to keep her pantyhose run-free, that she was a sleuth worthy of the term: adversary. And that was why he never lost sight of her as a threat to his enterprise.

"Prepare them for transport," murmured Gerald Sinclair as he regarded the slumbering blonde in the short black sweater dress. The henchman nodded, for he knew what had to be done.
