Hey! Guess who's un-furloughed next Monday?

Hey! Guess who's getting furloughed next week?

Some of you may or may not know that I actually work(ed) for a small-ish animation studio, though not in an artistic capacity. Essentially, among other duties, I am (was) the facilities maintenance guy. However, due to an industry-wide downturn, it's related trickle-down effect (remember all of the major animation/gaming companies imploding last year?), and some major contracts either being delayed or shelved, the company decided that it needed to furlough some of its surplus personnel.
The obvious question is what's the difference between a furlough and a layoff? In a nutshell, furloughed personnel aren't paid, but still receive benefits (medical, dental, etc.) for a set period. In a layoff, you receive nothing. In my case it's a 60-day furlough, taking effect this coming Wednesday and lasting through the end of August. Now, that isn't to say that they won't bring me back before the 60-day period ends...but there's also no guarantee that they won't extend it either.
So, yeah...that old chestnut.
At this juncture I'm pretty content to wait it out. I was happy there and, likewise, they were happy to have me there...everyone seemed quite surprised that I was included in the company's on-mass not-firing. I don't have any immediate plans to go out job hunting, full-time or otherwise, but you know...if the feces hits the rotating oscillator, I'll react accordingly.
So, what does that mean for Patreon and you fine folks? Well, the art still needs art'n...and I now seem to have a lot more free time on my hands. :P :D

Yeah, I guess so. Kinda sucks, but of the 20+ of us back in June, I’m the only one they’re bringing back. Good peoples, but all the rest were either in redundant positions or in departments that were no longer turning a profit…whereas my position/department is 1 of 1. Ahh, but it’s not all roses and lavender…they’re cutting me to part time hour, but with full time benefits.

2025-07-29 17:38:18 +0000 UTCWell that sucks, but then again they liked you so the chances of getting called back are high once they sort out the fact that they need a maintenance guy. But you're skilled enough not to stay unemployed for long if comes to that. But on the other hand you can now take the summer off and enjoy some well deserved down. And we get some great artwork in the meantime. Unfortunately I'm quite sure wifey has a rather long "Honey-do-list" But then again I'm sure you will take full advantage of the situation. Good luck my friend

2025-06-22 18:58:36 +0000 UTC"if the f_c_s hits the rotating oscillator" 😁 I like that. My version is "in the event that the excrement impacts the air-conditioning device" 😊
