I saw One Battle after Another at the Imax on Saturday, then I watched a torrent copy of it on Sunday. Seems like the movie uses Vineland as a loose frame, and changes all the War on Drugs stuff to today's immigration enforcement regime. The depiction is so current, it's kinda spooky. It appears PT Anderson has determined to place the onus of the narrative on the teenaged daughter of the male protagonist, in no small measure I would reckon, because he has 3 mixed race teen daughters with his partner Maya Rudolph. Apparently he had one of his daughters on set during the shoot. Maya Rudolph's mother Minnie Ripperton died of cancer when Maya was a baby, right after she had her first hit record. Gotta imagine Anderson drew on that, as well, to generate the character of the teen protagonist who grew up without her celebrated mother. The Sean Penn/Christmas Adventurer stuff is a whole other thing, though also enjoyable.
