The God of Many Names

This post will be about (some of) the many names (and facets) of the Demiurge - the God of the Old Testament. It will be akin to a glossary, written in plain and intuitive manner.

Azazel is a particularly interesting name for the Demiurge - it contains within it the idea of the all-encompassing entity (like Abraxas, whose name contains, numerologically, the 365), as it contrasts the A (the first letter of the alphabet) with the Z (the last letter). 'Azaz', in hebrew, means ''to remove'', and 'el', of course, means God. The name is also related to the hebrew word for scapegoat.

Azazel is associated with the desert, which is a place symbolic of Chaos and the Void, as it is empty and harsh (see Jesus' 40-day fast and journey through the desert, which ended with Satan - that is, Azazel - coming to tempt Him); and the influence of the Sun and of the Moon are amplified within it. There is a jewish ritual involving Azazel and sacrificial offerings; in this case, goats were offered - first, the men passed their sins onto a black goat; then, they sent it into the desert as an offering (to Azazel). As a brief aside, black goats are particularly valuable offerings because the goat is an animal emblematic of the concentrated, raw energy of nature (like the Dragon); just like the color black, which is the mixture of all things (and the color of the Void). So, a black goat conjoins these two factors in one being.

Samael is a name which is usually associated with the evil aspect of the Abrahamic God. One of its meanings is simply ''Sun God/Sun Child of God''. Another is ''Venom/Severity of God''. Samael is the aspect that punishes sinners, and is related to the figure of the grim reaper. Some interpretations claim him to be an archangel; but, like Azazel, he may simply be but a facet of the Demiurge.

The infamous serial killer David Berkowitz' nickname, Son of Sam, refers to Samael.

YAHWEH is the most common name attributed to the God of the Old Testament. This facet is related to the golden donkey head which was an object of idol worship (see onolatry) by jews, for which human lives were supposedly offered as sacrifices . YAHWEH may be pronounced as a donkey's cry, and Set, the Egyptian Adversary, the God of Chaos (who is also reflected in Typhon from Greek mythology), has a donkey's head and is directly related to the Demiurge. This name means, quite simply, ''I Am'', and Jehovah is a variation of it.

Yaldabaoth is the name which the Gnostics most prominently attributed to the God of the Old Testament. It means ''Child of Chaos/of Darkness'', as well as ''Child of the Egg'' (according to Madam Blavatsky). This name is the most intuitive in relation to the Gnostic view of the Demiurge, as Sophia birthed him in Paradise, but he fell through the egg's shell and into the dark, chaotic abyss; and there he created his own world.

Lucifer as one of (the false) God's names is the highest secret of Freemasonry. The God of the Old Testament is, indeed, the proud Lucifer, the fallen angel who wished to make his own world so he could rule as God. Lucifer means ''Lightbringer'' (Phosphorus). He is associated with not only the dawn, but with the Morning Star, which is Venus - a planet personified by Aphrodite, the (female) god of desire and beauty. Lucifer is a Rebis - a conjoining of opposites, a hermaphroditic being. He can appear as both a man and a woman; he is the Sun (the Lion) and the Moon (the Serpent). In truth, the Demiurge and his offspring are the entire cosmos; all of the planets are but his aspects.

Satan is the most popular among the names listed here, for it is a figure well known by almost everyone in this planet. He represents, of course, the evilness of God; the dark side of the dualism. This name means ''Adversary'' or ''Accuser'', perfectly betraying his nature as the opposing pole.
