Tropes!

Tropes are a popular thing in media, and I was just thinking... what are some of your favorite tropes?

I know a bunch of you like the Childhood Friend Romance, for obvious reasons (yes, I like it too)! I'm also a fan of the whole enemies to lovers kind of trope (Bowser, please love me).

They don't -have- to be romantic tropes either! I'm just curious to hear what some of your favorite tropes in media are.

Comments

I love that trope too, haha

DyneWulf

Aww, always sad that there's not a happy ending, but... I feel ya there

DyneWulf

I lived the jock/nerd trope. In HS, I was good friends with the captain of the wrestling team while I was in the yearbook, anime, & chess clubs. He was a nice dude and everyone thought it was weird how close friends we were. Unfortunately it doesn't have a happy ending but it was fun while it lasted.

Origamisteve

I'm very much into the trop of a jock and a nerd, a big stocky muscle gut jock secretly liking the shy nerdy guy that has a thing for himbo jocks 🥰

Mrknives70

I'm a big fan of age differences in relationships. I love the generational dynamics and power play that comes from that, so long as it's consensual, it's a large part of why I love Harold and Richard's routes the most.

Wheeler Bertrand

Oooh yes, that was a big theme in Engaging Destiny... I quite enjoy that one

DyneWulf

I don't think anyone can argue against that one, haha

DyneWulf

I can't say I know either, but that one is fun too, haha

DyneWulf

Oh yes, lots of good marks here!

DyneWulf

I personally love the big gruff guy that is terrifying but fiercely protective of his chosen friend\love.

TheWhiteFoxEffect

I've always been into Mentor x Mentee relationship tropes, like wizard x apprentice or college professor x student (Grifter lol). Unfortunately it's rare to get anything other than the professor x student relationship.

Patchwork Soul

Love me some medieval fantasy!

DyneWulf

It's such a wild arc!

DyneWulf

Hahaha, lots of good ones here though!

DyneWulf

That's a fun one too! I like that not all villains are just... heartless assholes, haha

DyneWulf

Oooh,that's a great one!

DyneWulf

It's just cute!

DyneWulf

Mmmm, both great things

DyneWulf

Haha, leave it to Darius...!

DyneWulf

My favorite troupe has to be the enemies to lovers. I love the idea of the villain having a crush on the main character, trying to protect him but at the same time keeping it a secret from his crush until he feels ready to tell him.

Ricardo Castro Jr.

the giant mega bodybuilder (secretly power bottom) falling in love with the small quiet nerd (secretly has big dik) :3

Bryan Salazar

I second that. The sap in me likes to find good in anyone until proven otherwise, within reason, of course.

Wheeler Bertrand

THE bed cliche/trope that is under played imo is the big threatening type that is an absolute softy. They don't even have to be big n scary, they can just have the meanest aura or just give off the don't mess with me attitude but end up being the sweetest towards children/animals/innocence. Hard-ass archetype but gentle heart.

Tigen Reis Lionhart

I can't help but love when a villain is actually a nice person at heart and can't help themselves from being helpful and nice to strangers in need, forgetting they're supposed to be the bad guy. Not sure what the name of that trope is though.

Andrew

Big fan of enemy to lover, but also “very unhelpful or perhaps traitorous character eventually warms to the hero and repents” as well as “Brutish exterior, cinnamon roll interior.” Getting the team together stories are often a lot of fun, unreliable narrators are fun, and who doesn’t love a found family narrative?

Bruce

Oh, that seems like a fun one too

DyneWulf

What about both? Why not childhood friends, to enemies, to lovers. Like Jinx and Ekko.

JakklJakk

A favorite of mine too

DyneWulf

Haha, yes to all of them!

DyneWulf

Yes, this is excellent

DyneWulf

For worldbuilding, I love the medieval setting with fantasy trope and the 80's neon dark city in Sci-fi. For characters, the duo with completely different personalities who respect each other.

Rokin

I just discovered that i get really invested on the lover with disfuctional family who doesnt know how to properly love trope

Leafside

Well in romance i really been liking the "nerd guys makes the bully turn a new leaf and fall in love trope" But in a more general area ive been enjoying the "prodigy that comes from a low background so he has to show he is capable" trope

Leafside

Enemies to Lovers is a 10 out of 10 for me

Dendy Masuzoe

-Found family is always 10/10, even if the actual family being shitty is hard, cause it makes the found family even better -Gentle giants are a treat, I love them(My beloved Kaiju) -Shy/calm/mild person that in confidence is kinky "cheff kiss" -Tease me and overtease, but they know the point where consent is needed and when to stop. -Witty remarks with a rude personality can add a lot with a good. I don't know if these are all tropes or don't, but I know that some are I didn't add childhood friend but I want to point out that it's the first in my book for a loooot of reasons, if I had to write them down I would need a while

Valen

I'm a big fan of the intimidating guy that's bad at expressing himself, but has a heart of gold 💛

Carson

Finding out someone you had a crush on.l was acting weird around you because they had a crush on you too.

Flashlion

My absolute favorite trope is the villain who treats his people with care and respect! I love humanising moments from flawed/evil people. Dr. Doom actually being a decent ruler in some iterations, Yzma spending time with kronk and letting the guard turned cow be excused, Greed and Wrath from FMA having specific people they care about, etc. Bonus points if it's a villain trying to romance the main character, not out of a means to control but because of legitimate connection

FaeCourt

I love me a gentle giant!

DyneWulf

Those can be really cute too

DyneWulf

This is something Gavel would love too, hahaha

DyneWulf

I like the trope of older brother or sisters best friend and the younger sibling who thought they where cool learns that they are attracted to them or the trope in fantasy where they find out their special and there are a multitude of people from the new world interest in them for ether them or status and if it’s status they soon fall in love and now they can’t get the thought of using them out of their head because they now love them and can’t go wrong with age gap love I have a lot of different ones for romance but if I’m going to go with non romance it’s found family and finding them in a tough time and learning about yourself and them through that time

Rockingdemon101

Also personally i am a fan of either superheroes, or magic fantasy world, in their core too. I'm not that much picky there, do enjoy both world built themes.

Xeralex

Well personally I'll say my favorite ones are: - from rivals to lovers (like Cardcaptor Sakura, with Li and sakura) - transformation power OCs, (not Way O.P., more like druid TF powers, or American dragon style), that do live a bit of a double life perhaps too. And for more spicy tropes: - bigger sized, stoic like oc, be quite a lewd bottom - stories like Embay Circle, but with more transformation options perhaps too X3c.

Xeralex

I like the "shy guy is secretely a freak and a beast in bed" trope

Diego Garza

I like the "normal guy" trope honestly. Like, the only one that doesn't use magic in a fantasy world, the only person without cyber enhancements in a cyberpunk setting, the only one without powers in a super heroes series, etc. They have so much potential for depth and creativity in their problem solving and their overcoming of challenges

Mersio

While I'm not really a fan of tropes, I also can't deny there are a few I really like: Found family, Siblings as best friends, and Platonic physical affection.

Izanagi

I think those scenes where the rival/antagonistic character has a heart-to-heart with the protagonist. Not necessarily to make up or make peace, but to share a moment of humanity. Found Family is always a delight. I adore transformation scenes (i.e. Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, etc.). I love Golden Retriever/Himbo Characters, and I am a sucker for [well thought out] plot twist villains. Annnd I'd say... Fight Scenes Choreographed to popular music.

Angelic Bard - Pflegehund

I really like when a powerful figure (either powerful in a society type of way, so like a boss or something. Or when they have cosmic powers or somthing like that) falls for someone who isnt quite as strong and is loyal to them. Protecting them

Warfare

One that is silly to me is big tough guy falling for quiet sweet guy.

Nathan Watkins

My two favorites are: 1. The HUNG, BUFF, HIMBO! 2. One trope that I love; and I feel is also kinda starting to disappear is the Large-Dom Small-Sub dynamic. I feel like most of the time now in comics or VN's it's always the smaller person who is the dom. I don't mind small subs at all either but as Richard once said "Everyone loves a thick man."

Silverjack

I'm in to a lot of the positive energy tropes. 'Found Family' is a personal favorite. Another is when someone gets assistance from another person who's not there (can't remember the precise title - usually encouragement from beyond the grave). Anything that shows hidden depths too. And a lot of what Darius is. I can't define them all but why I like him so much is that he's a lot of my tropes I enjoy rolled in to a character.

Roque

The seemingly big intimidating but quiet and the smaller extrovert who decides they like them and drags the bigger partner into a relationship where they can finally be themselves.

Arzei

Enemies to lovers or Rivals to lovers is my favorite

George L Robertson

I do love a good story about a Fake relationship turned real by the end due to them learning more about each other. Also Age Gap is a good one too, trying to make a relationship work despite the difference in values they were raised by and in the end they prove to help each other improve themselves ultimately growing closer.

KCrow

Ooooh, I love a “gentle giant” - a big tough-looking bear of a man who looks like he could crush your head, but is actually a HUGE softy and cutie patootie, the biggest gentle soul 🥰💖

Crolossus

I love power dynamics, like a captain falling for a subordinate, or people that are bitter enemies turning into lovers

badaimrac00n

I'm a SUCKER for found family, rivals-to-lovers, and endearing perverts~

Snowden Namdar

Enemies to Lovers can be a real fun one. I also really like Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Or really just guys that from the outside seem like tough/mean guys but are actually really nice (or submissive, also a nice bonus)

Konran

I don't know if there's a name for this troupe, but big and tough characters having a soft spot for a specific person

Crozby87

Found Family and the Gentle Giant are absolutely my favorite tropes. The endorphins overflow seeing strangers come together in compassion and camaraderie.

Isa_Lion

Oblivious-to-Lovers trope is a favorite romantic trope, if only because I am also clueless.

B.

Here's an underused trope. Childhood friends to enemies, then to relunctant allies, then back to friends, then friends eventually becoming lovers

KuribohBBQ

I'm a slut for the mysterious and quiet man having a horrible or naughty secret that changes everything.
