Tekkonkinkreet: Anime Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*ANYTHING BUT BLACK AND WHITE HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Okay, so I went into this movie 100% blind and I recommend you do as well - I was blown away by so many things about it. It was the summer of 2006 when this movie based on a 90's manga came out and the visuals, the symbolism, and the story just shook me to my core. I can't wait to talk with you all about this one!

THANK YOU, Shimoyama, for recommending an incredible film!

Tekkonkinkreet: Anime Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Thank you so much! I LOVED this movie and we’ve had some great ones this month! I love the rural vs. the urban of the two films! Yes, Shimoyama did really good with this selection!! I’m glad you bit your tongue, haha, because the selections were a lot of fun! Kuro and Shiro are such great foils for each other! I love the idea of the protector as someone that “falls” and is tempted and the one being protected as the actual savior of the one who believes they’re “saving them.” I like that unlike how most dreamers or idealists are discouraged for not being “real,” it’s Shiro’s light that actually wins out in the end with saving Kuro, too. Definitely well-worded in this comment! Hahaha, so many themes of resistance in this! And yes, I loved all the “modern” themes going throughout here not only with the characters themselves but the world around them! I absolutely LOVE that Masaaki Yuasa has been explored on this channel - I REALLY love their work! And the work by the mangaka illustration-wise as well! That is so awesome about Studio 4(degree)Celsius - thank you for that information about them! And oohhhh, I think that Uramichi Oniisan brings up JAniCA in its manga perhaps? Because that sounds familiar! That is awesome that they are union and push for better working conditions! I told a few that in the comments for another series that I became my school’s union president this year and it’s been an eye-opening experience as we’ve been doing negotiations. Definitely makes me feel more for these organizations and the good they can do! That’s also WILD about Morimoto working with the same team as GunBuster’s reference…what a small world! “Definitely not a union” haha!! It’s wild that it took that long, I agree - what a wild time 2007 was - I was a year into college, then. *sighs in nostalgia* Anyway, I love that information in connection to this movie! Thank you for the comment and kind words - this is one of my favorites of the year - up there with Inu-Oh! - and I’m excited for the movies in July!

Loved the reaction and discussion! Between Natsume, GunBuster and this – I’ve seen a whole progression of the back wall in order! 😆 I have to say – Tekkonkinkreet and Mai Mai Miracle were an amazing pairing to commission together! These two films are truly a duality – in art, tone, animation, pacing, the urban and the rural, the real and the imagined, etcetc. Also show the variety present in Japanese animation so well. Round of applause for Shimoyama! 🥰 Have had to bite my tongue about this since I found out about the commissions back in April! 😆 I especially love the contrasting of Kuro and Shiro and the complexity of their interdependence. Kuro as the protector who gets a taste for the violence, descends into darkness. When he ‘confronts’ his internal Minotaur (half trauma, half ferality), the ‘darkness’ is so affectionate - loved the presentation. Then Shiro as the dreamer who squares up against the reality of the world and then does not succumb to its brutality, chooses to maintain his ‘light.’ He gains agency in such a beautiful way. Because their development is so interconnected, I think a lot of what the film wants to say is that it is really important to allow the different parts of ourselves to integrate. Themes of resistance? About a baker’s dozen! (Yes, I will keep this bit going for the rest of time. 🤣) Especially: resistance against homogenisation and control exerted by the corpo-yakuza. (Also very interesting to present the idea of gentrification originating directly with organised crime.) Personal resistance in Kuro and his struggle to protect Shiro. And Shiro’s accompanying defiance against accepting what the world wants him to believe is inevitable. And of course, the marginalised fighting for space in an environment which seeks to silence them. Your noting of Devilman: Crybaby, Inu-Oh and Ping Pong were very fitting! 🥰 Those three of course share being the work of Masaaki Yuasa. And it’s already noted in a comment that Ping Pong and Tekkonkinkreet share the mangaka. So I want to point out Koji Morimoto – who is a legend! But specifically, co-founder of Studio 4°C: which produced this and where Yuasa was really allowed to find his footing. The two of them collaborated on a number of projects and Morimoto is only about 6-7 years older than Yuasa, so I can really see there being a kind of peer mentor relationship between them. And a fun fact (at least for me), Morimoto is also one of the founders of JAniCA (Japanese Animation Creators Association) – essentially the first animator’s labour union in Japan (even though legally it isn’t certified as such). But they are a non-profit organisation for animators and creators with a focus on improving working conditions, pushing for living wages and combating exploitative working practices… Not a union? Ok, just quacks like a duck, I guess. 😆 Morimoto’s first credit is from 1980 (by fun coincidence on Aim for the Ace!, which has come up in GunBuster comments) – and this definitely-not-a-union was founded in 2007! Still can’t believe how long it took. I just think this is a really interesting parallel with the themes of exploitation which are all over Tekkonkinkreet. A stellar reaction and discussion! Thank you to Shimoyama for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
