Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms: Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

 *WOVEN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Wow, this movie was a RIDE! Such a beautifully constructed concept with Maquia being a character I SO rooted for and could relate to -- there's quite a lot to discuss with this movie, but there were laughs, tears, and many a heartfelt sigh and yelling with this movie! Let's talk about it!

Thank you, CoughMe, for commissioning this movie! I really enjoyed it!

Hahaha the animation quality is sunshine and rainbows! The content? Not so much but still such a gorgeous movie! Yeah, I really was feasting for the eyes throughout the movie, but the last 10 minutes just cut to the core of me as well! And ooohhh, well, I’m not caught up with a lot of the “modern” Disney movies, but I have seen UP! The most gut-wrenching opening 7 minutes of Disney cinema! CoughMe did a great job with this commission! I honestly mellowed on my stance with Leilie after the discussion, but the whole medieval “control and manipulation of women bodies” - especially by male authors - just gets to me ever so slightly - maybe when I get to my Berserk discussion, I’ll get up on that topic for an entire point! But yeah, I could watch a whole series based on this premise easily! Ooohhh, I will have to watch the dub for this one! :D Thank you for that recommendation and the kind words and comment!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I really enjoyed this film and it was much more layered than I anticipated - I’m amazed what all they were able to get done in less than 2 hours! Yesss, the animation and the characterization (especially with Maquia) were beautiful! And yes, my disdain for medieval literature’s aspect like that just makes me grumble grumble so much - and YES, “time is a brutal mistress” indeed! <3 That dog scene, though, DESTROYED my soul. Ooh, that’s a great note about the children vs. adults and topics of “control” surrounding them! That’s a great point to bring out in all this and then the discussion of immortality added on top of it! And yes, I’m so glad that despite it all, Ariel had a good and long life, but yes, complicated feelings! CoughMe did GREAT with this commission and I’m really excited for what’s to come in April!

Maquia: Where the Sunshine and Rainbows Aren't! Sunspots covered a lot of good thoughts I agree with - beautiful art style, really gorgeous and refined, and for all the details in the visuals they don't miss a single chance to make sure a dagger lands in your heart. Those last ten minutes got me good! 😭 Reminded me a little of another non-anime movie, I wonder how Romania would feel about a commission of Up? 😈 Kidding! Though I doubt there's many Disney movies you haven't caught! Thanks for picking an interesting movie, CoughMe! Along with the great reaction and discussion Romania! I definitely agree with the dated medieval tropes for women in regard to their role in the plot (it's fantasy, be better!) and the whole point about Leilia. The movie does land in a slightly awkward position between not being as concise as it could and not being a 26-episode series with room to really go crazy exploring everything in more detail, which I think I would have loved! Space out the pain a bit that way too haha! I enjoyed the movie a lot and checked it out in the dub a few days later! I was a bit surprised to find myself enjoying the dub more than I expected, so that was a nice bonus! I still found the subs + original VA to be better for me, but I do love to check out dubs!

Loved the reaction & discussion! This was another film that was on my long-list for a long while and needed the help of a reaction. I am a big fan of Mari Okada (the director+writer) and hope to catch up with all of her work at some point. 🥰 Various things I loved: Loved the visuals and the environments, such lush colours. The moment of them putting the blanket on the doggo! 😭 Darel was my favourite little side-character. 😂 The "medieval" fiction rant 😂 - I agree with this completely and it is why I have a tough time getting the motivation to watch things within these settings. How unceremoniously they did time-skips. Time is a brutal mistress in this film. I also think this is definitely one of those films where someone takes away what they bring to it. For me, a significant part of it was an examination of a specific type of interaction within familial relationships (and those adjacent to them) – the reliance on pre-emptive grief as a manipulation and control tactic used on children. All the focus on who will die when, etc. And whenever someone tells a child not to grow up - while the motivation isn’t to do with wanting the child to have an easier time for longer, but with not having to consider their own aging or mortality or loneliness. So it was really interesting to juxtapose that with actual immortality (whatever shape it took for Iorph). A lot of complicated feelings from this movie! In the end, I am really glad Ariel lived a good and long life. Thank you to CoughMe for this commission! 🥰 Looking forward to everything coming up in April! 💙
