When Alexander the great reached india, Greek and Buddhist ideas influenced each other. In Greece this gave rise to Epicurean and Stoic Philosophy, and in India this influenced Buddhist Iconography. Hercules (wielding a club and wearing lion skin) became a Wrathful deity, and eventually traveled to Japan where his symbolism mixed with local mythology to create Modern Oni. I apologize if this does not translate well. It's hard to explain even in English.
