New Patreon Fees :/
Added 2017-12-07 00:57:04 +0000 UTCHey guys~
I've just found out there will be some new fees for Patrons starting this month; up til now, these fees were taken out on MY end, but Patreon is planning to shift it so it's charged on the Patron's end instead. This is Patreon's choice and not something I chose or have any control over. You can see more creator/patron reactions plus more info about the fees over on Twitter right now.
You guys should be getting an email tomorrow from Patreon with more info about the fees; currently they plan to start implementing it on the 18th, which would mean current patrons should have to pay them next time you're charged on January 1st.
There are a lot of creators speaking up that they'd like to have a choice in this change, since it would have the most effect on the $1 pledges and people who pledge to many creators at once, who may not be able to afford those extra fees. While I'm sure ALL creators would like to make more money, none of us wants that at the expense of our current patrons.
If this is going to effect your ability to continue supporting creators, or even if it doesn't, please consider sending a note to Patreon directly and letting them know how you feel about it. Since they're still a small company, there's a chance they might actually listen, and find a better way to approach this issue. https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I really hope this resolves for the best, it's always kind of a bet relying on this sort of website for income, but as you said there aren't many other options out there that feel as safe. Which is probably why they are deciding to push on their users a bit. Let's hope they realize that they are going to lose a lot of us if they go through with this.

2017-12-08 21:46:20 +0000 UTCWell, that sucks. I hope they reconsider doing things this way. Just looking at the thread on twitter it looks like tons of creators are seeing the repercussions of this change and for most it's their livelihood now. I only have the means to pledge to a handful of creators, but it's support that I'm happy to provide. I know most people probably can't keep up the pledges because of all this, but here's hoping that Patreon listens.
2017-12-08 19:54:01 +0000 UTCI understand where you're coming from completely, suspected that was probably the case. Some artists have their own websites and monthly subscription fees but it's a little more obscure than a well known site like Patreon so I understand your reluctance. I hope they listen, it's not fair on you at all.

2017-12-08 02:26:39 +0000 UTCThank you :) It's a difficult and depressing situation; there are simply no current good alternatives that do what Patreon does in my specific situation. The main alternative that's bouncing around is Kickstarter's upcoming Drip, which prohibits the content I make, and the others that are mentioned often are so small that it makes me nervous to transfer my whole situation over there (and in most cases, also prohibit the content I make). Leaving Patreon would mean I would need to restructure all of my art production for a different model, but I have no idea what that model could possibly be yet, since most sites won't allow my work. I'm hoping that they listen to reason and will at least make it opt in on some level. If they allowed patrons to choose to cover these fees and take them off the creators, many still would, and those that simply cannot afford it wouldn't have to. The founder doesn't seem like a completely unreasonable person, I hope this reaction will spur a change of heart.

2017-12-07 22:40:06 +0000 UTCWrote some fairly scathing feedback imploring them to listen to their creators and consumers before we find ourselves a more respectful alternative. I'll follow you wherever you go if you choose to leave <3 I hope you're okay

2017-12-07 16:26:57 +0000 UTCi support only handful of artists, and most of them 1usd/month. and if there will be extra fees, i'll have to drop some of them. :(

2017-12-07 04:42:06 +0000 UTCThanks for the link. I support about 40 artists, and it's my choice to spend $400+ a month to support them. But this new approach is going to cost me $14 just in the 35 cent fee per patron, plus the percentage each ... I'm probably going to have to drop several artists because of what these fees are going to add to my bill.
