EP17 So, you are an episode director and you are handed an episode to work on that is mostly plot important dialogue. How do you keep the audience focused to absorb the plot points and avoid the “boardroom episode”? If you work at CloverWorks, you teach a master class in the art that I haven’t seen since Kaguya-sama. Throw in a puppet show cut, a game show cut, time lapse, super deform, keep the camera in motion, pan, zoom, dolly, tilt, combo them all. When you think you have seen it all, let’s do a 1-1 manga to anime comparison! When the characters do move, go all in. That cut of Marin walking into the sewing room with the suit on really drove home the point Gojo was about to make. If you ever doubt how much the CloverWorks team love this IP, take a close look at the key rack cut coming out of the OP. The 2 keys with the pink and blue fobs. The bow (the round part of the key) on the left key is embossed with YOU. The key on the right the ridge pattern on the bow is the letter I over a circle. Look further down the keys and the ridges of the teeth form Marin and Gojo’s profiles. That is not from a manga panel, it’s a storyboard original. EP 18 Wow, just wow! CloverWorks took one of the most moving sets of events in the manga and turned the dial up to, not 11, more like 18! That was emotional enough in the manga but in motion it just hits sooo much harder. Marin won a whole lot more than she thinks she did. I love that they spent so much time on the makeup scene. To me those scenes have always felt the most emotionally intimate peaks of the show. The care Gojo takes and the trust Marin has in him is so moving. For the first time we get to know Gojo’s thoughts on Marin’s appearance. Sure, he’s subconsciously let it slip before. But this was rational self reflection. W Marin might use Morita-kun for the model on walking and posing, but she uses Gojo for the rizz! Gotta love it!
