Yamada is, I believe, the most popular surname in Japan. Taro Yamada is even used the same America uses John Doe for an unidentified person. The fact comes into play several times. What was in ep 1 an unmotivated character break has now become motivated by scenes demonstrating Yamada's interest in Ichikawa. It's all in providing the context.
