One of my top tier titles. I’m looking forward to seeing you discover it too. Alas, nothing is perfect, but fortunately this gets done with my pet peeve early. It just always bugs me when a writer uses an unmotivated character break. Norio Sakarai does write good character breaks, heck all of Kyotaro’s actions are character breaks, but she clearly provides the motivations behind them so they make for a very good portrayal of the confusion of puberty. An example of the unmotivated character break is the bike toss scene. Prior scenes, especially the bookstore scene immediately proceeding clearly establish one of Anna’s character traits. She’s an attention seeker. She should be enjoying this attention. Because Sakarai-sensei is portraying this tale from Kyotaro’s perspective she needs to have Anna break that trait in this situation to provide a white knight opportunity as opposed to simple jealousy. But I think it would have felt much smoother if she had demonstrated beforehand some motivation she would reject attention. Given that this title is Sakarai-sensei’s first romcom title. She came off this tiny slip to write a delightful story of first love for a twisted teenager.
