The viewer attachment to Kite was significantly reduced in the 2011 version, I recall Togashi himself saying that he regretted that decision

Also if I'm remembering correctly that scene with Kite meeting Gon on Whale Island actually showed up near the beginning of the manga. I remember hearing that it also appeared at the beginning of the 1999 version of the anime too.
