Since questions about Syphilis came up here some I wrote up some information and at what point it fits into the timeline in the anime, though I probably went overboard. Syphilis if untreated as 3 stages: Primary Stage: Symptoms appear 10 days to 3 months after infection, typically as sores and swollen lymph nodes in the mouth or genital area. These heal on their own within 2–6 weeks, but if untreated, the infection progresses. Secondary Stage: A few weeks after the sores disappear, symptoms like rashes (often on the palms or soles), fatigue, headaches, fever, or hair loss can appear. These may last a few weeks or come and go for months. Since medical knowledge was limited, Maomao’s mother likely continued working whenever she felt better, unknowingly spreading the disease. If she was desperate, she may have had to take clients for small change even while showing symptoms. Latent Stage: After about a year, syphilis enters a dormant phase. For about a year, it can still be transmitted, but eventually, it becomes non-contagious. This is the stage when Loumen came to the Verdigris house, since she had no symptoms, there was no way for him to know she was infected and treat her, and they didn't trust him so no one told him until it was too late. Tertiary Stage: If untreated, syphilis can resurface years or even decades later, causing severe damage to the brain, nerves, heart, bones, and other organs. Symptoms vary depending on which part of the body is affected, but they can include strokes, dementia, numbness, paralysis, blindness, deafness, heart disease, and severe skin or bone deformities. In Maomao’s mother’s case, she clearly shows signs of dementia, she might have had a stroke that played into it, her body is covered in rashes, and—though hidden by her hair—she has lost her nose to it.
