What Jinshi did with that hairpin is basically making her as "a man of very high rank is interested in her" on the surface that can be interpreted as him just selfishly claiming her as his own possession. Continuing that line of thinking though another interpretation would be that after hearing her story and the reason for the freckles he gave her the hairpin as something of a deterrent. So other men wouldn't do anything inappropriate to her, as doing so would mean someone that outranks them will hear about it and will be pissed.
