The thing is, those characters aren't a mix of the archetypes. I know you said it's not their defining feature, but Tanjiro's entire character is how pure-hearted he is (which I'm not critiquing at all) whereas I'm thinking specifically of a middle ground between the arrogant fighting obsessed goofy protagonists (Naruto, Luffy, Natsu), and the ones you mentioned like Ichigo. I didn't think of other characters like those you stated when writing this comment and admittedly it's very hard to explain what I mean, but... I'm just envisioning this as if the typical shounen MC's weren't as hotheaded + kinda dense + actually smart For instance, take Tanjirou. He's not hotheaded at all, he's very openly kind and caring... same with Deku- hence those aren't the ones I'm referring to...? I don't know honestly

2024-11-28 10:48:20 +0000 UTCIt's really refreshing to see a shounen protagonist who isn't limited to a single character archetype. Most shounen mc's are loud, bashful, goofy, friendly (kinda), and simple-minded, but they're nothing outside of that (on the surface level anyway). Then there's smart MC's like Light Yagami or... Saiki K? (Haven't seen the show), but they're ONLY that. Edward is actually both like your regular shounen mc in a lot of ways, but also super smart, and it's realistic considering how these boys had to learn the entirety of alchemy and equivalent exchange at like 10 years old. It's just such a breath of fresh air to see a protagonist that has a lot of your typical shounen archetypes but is also smart... don't get me wrong, I love Natsu, but he's also a fucking idiot so like-
