It's not about just listening to his girl. They made a point of showing that Aethelflaed is more acting in the spirit of what Alfred imagined about standing up to Danes for a united Kingdom. Whereas Edward is shown to being influenced by how father and law, and he was thinking of risking the kingdoms of Mercia East Anglia just waiting out Cnut. In the end he would have allowed cnut to gather more power and he would be left alone with no allies. Safe but alone.

It would have been wild and ridiculous if he just immediately was like okay and killed her and also the Welsh were promised the spoils of war so if Uhtred even tried to say anything or take Brida that would have been a huge no no.
