Even though Alfred is a hater, Uhtred did manipulate Edward for his own agenda to get Skade back

Uhtred's curse is that he will 'always know pain' Uhtred's pain is that he loses the one's he loves. Uhtred may have been born a Saxon as well as Brida, but they hold their beliefs differently. Once taken as a child Brida now always sees Saxons as weak and less than and, in my opinion, falls on the extreme side of being a Dane. Uhtred doesn't want to choose one or the other. He sees himself as both deep down but a practicing Dane on the surface. It is everyone else that is always trying to make him choose one or the other.

2024-07-20 21:05:53 +0000 UTCThe reason why Uhtred left Ragnar this time around, was because he felt conflicted since the first time he left Wessex (Leofric - the manifestation of his conscience- told him so many times) and he didn't actually want to wage war against Wessex and Alfred, his men didn't want him to stay there and do that, and he is very loyal to his men, he did not like the other Danes with whom Raggnar had allied himself, he didn't believe the army would hold and the thing that broke the conflict was that he learnt that Aethelflaed was in danger and she needed him and he cares for her. If he had stayed by Raggnar;s side, he would have been forced to wage war against Wessex (when he doesn't want to), his men would either be branded traitors or they would leave him, and Aethelflaed would have been captured or dead, so if you consider all this, it becomes quite a reasonable decision. A hard one for sure and one that will weigh on his mind, but an unavoidable one i believe.
