Good reaction. You are right somewhat that it is a bit weird that he would chose Aethelflaed at this moment. The books had built up Uhtred's connection to Aethelflaed a bit more (even as a child weirdly enough) which the show didn't do, but i believe that they have built very well his dilemma between saxon and dane. Aethelflaed's call (and especially her releasing him from his oath and asking for him to help her) is just the final push that he needed to tip the scales between his dilemma.
