Yes Hinata was actually dead, but it had not been long since her death, and her soul was still safe and intact. These are the conditions for using 'Resurrection' which is a Miracle level Holy Magic. Rimuru had no way of healing Hinata's physical body because all of his methods are magicule based, but with his Skills he would have at least been able to preserve her soul 'Preserver' is such an awful translation for Hinata's second Unique skill. It is called 'Mathematician' in all other forms of media and given its subskills (Analytical Appraisal, Predictive Calculation, and Thought Acceleration) that name makes so much more sense. I hate that the anime translated it this way. In the web novel, Hinata and Nicolaus are actually lovers (or at the very least they sleep together lol) but in the Light Novels they changed it so he is more like a fanatic follower of Hinata.
