It's been hinted at several times with like every ship and more directly been seen with character motivations like Jellal and Erza but nothing as upfront as "I love you". Even if August had for some reason been killed here, did he really think the NATION DESTROYER BRANDISH would have allowed him to walk the fuck away from it? Dumb...just a dummy. Between this, and the weird Wendy stuff, he is probably my least favorite character of the entire series, which is a shame, because he has cool magic, and sometimes I think Mashima just needed a scapegoat, and wrote Mest in LMAO
