The amount of overthinking that went through your head about the merchant's kid being saved made me chuckle. The clue/context lies in what the merchant said, "SOMEONE just as broke as you..." It was Emilia who saved the kid, hence why Subaru said, "fate has a funny way of doing things".

2023-11-09 04:16:27 +0000 UTCIn case you didn't know, there is a directors cut version of the first season with some timing changes, a small additional scene at the very end (but that scene is the start of S2 so you aren't gonna miss it) and some updated visuals at some points. It combined the 25 episodes into 13 50min episodes though. Well the changes aren't dramatic so it doesn't really matter which version you watch, you aren't gonna miss out on anything important.
