Today I present to you a map that traces historical bridge construction. I was particularly inspired by the Roman approach, which built incredibly durable structures (I still regularly walk across a 1900 year old Roman bridge).
Here you can find a nice animation that shows the construction of a Roman bridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0FZSmqcM-U
Roughly summarized:
Heavy wooden piles are driven into the riverbed (from boats that also had heavy equipment on board).
The piles are then connected with wooden boards, with rubble and clay in between to seal it. Then the area separated from the river is emptied (I assume with pumping systems or lots of workers with buckets).
Then the foundations can be laid.
This is repeated on the other side of the river, connecting the pillars and laying the bridge road over them.
I wish a lot of fun on this map! :)
