Dungeon of the Titan
Background of the dungeon
Once upon a time there was a war. A war of gods and titans. The world trembled under that conflict, and it trembled again when it ended. The titans were slayen fell to earth. Their bodies became part of the mountains, but their physical activities never stopped completely. Their blood continued to pump through their bodies and the volcanic heat of their driving energy lived on. Attracted by this energy, other creatures came and tapped and expanded the natural tubes that run through the Titan's body.
Evil forces spread in the warmth of the titan and now threaten the environment.
Possible plot hooks.
In the surrounding cities, this area was mostly simply ignored and avoided. But slowly the volcanic plain continued to expand. As if the energy behind it was getting more powerful. Now the cities are threatened with long-term displacement, as more and more lava flows break up in their vicinity.
Today it is our heroes who stand in front of this huge body and have the task of destroying the evil that lives here in order to prevent the volcanic landscape from spreading. The immediate vicinity of the Titan is already free of all nature and only a hot dystopian lava landscape. After the first skirmishes on the surface of the titans against some monsters our brave warriors penetrate the giants interior.
What our heroes encounter here is not what they expected. Two factions reside within the dungeon.
On the one hand there are fiery lizard cratures, which are very hostile to our heroes. In addition, volcanic dryads live in this dungeon. They are not directly hostile, but they are also allied with the lizards. Despite their differences, these two peoples have entered into a symbiotic relationship.
The lizards defend the dungeon against the invading monsters, which are attracted by the blood and the heat of the titans. Without the lizards, the dryads would have long been destroyed.
The dryads, in turn, take care of the lizards and heal them. And they also heal the titan. This titan, dejected long ago, still has a spark of life in it. As long as this does not go out, the blood continues to pump through the ground and the lava is active.
As the dryads heal, the Titan continues to wake up, which is why the volcanic landscape continues to expand. Within the dungeon, our heroes will encounter monsters, the lizards, the dryads, and groups of both lizards and dryads. When our heroes have deciphered this symbiotic network and its background, they have to make a decision.
At the heart of the titans (north of the second floor) the dryads and lizards prepare to revive the titan. They throw trapped living creatures into the pool of blood (this pool gets its contents from the ever-flowing stream of blood that runs through the dungeon from the south. This blood then gets pumped into the surrounding soil, where it slowly distributes into the whole body.)
There are three scenarios for the final conflict in this dungeon.
The resurrection of the titan: If your heroes can convince the dryads and lizards, despite the first bloody battles, that they are not their enemys, they can resurrect the titan with them. There is a monster who lives nearby and has the necessary energy to restore life to the Titan. It was too powerful that the lizards would have dared to call it to the heart, but together with our heroes it can succeed. Together with lizards and dryads they then call a powerful monster, which digs its way to the heart with many minions. Your fighter have to defeat it and plunge it (wounded but still alive) into the blood pool. The Titan will awaken and begin to rise. (Our heroes will have to run out quickly). The dryads promise to move him to an inanimate country.
Disadvantage of this decision: A resurrected Titan will easily overlook one or the other village on his journey.
The killing of the titan: Our heroes draw to the heart and fight heroically (especially against the lizards). Ultimately, someone has to dive into the blood pool and ram a blade deep into the ground to finally kill the titan. The lava will freeze, as will the blood flow. The cities are saved
Disadvantage: The dryads will die deprived of their habitat. The surviving lizards leave the titan and haunt the area.
The Titan's Paralysis: A dryad has a plan of her own. She doesn't like the idea that the Titan will rise. Her solution is a poison, which will cause the titan's skin to harden and tighten. No monsters will be able to penetrate, as the entrances will close. Digging in or out will not be possible either. The expansion of the lava landscape will also stop. So that the dryads can live safely, but all lizards must die.
Your heroes also need the blood of the lizards to carry out the poisoning.
Our heroes have to deceive the lizards, give their food a special herb, injure them and then throw as many bleeding lizards as possible into the pool. (Did I mention that the herb will paralyze the titan but will first cause a berserk-like condition on the lizards?)
Disadvantage: This is a cowardly action by the heroes and some dryads are also against this approach. And just like when the Titan gets up, our heroes must flee quickly after the fight, otherwise they will be trapped in the Titan (possible subsequent quest. The escape from the Titan)
Tips for mechanics within the dungeon:
1. Use the heat of the dungeon. Let it rise higher and higher until your heroes either come up with a good protection or they have to take off their armor so as not to get burned.
2. The opponents of your heroes are of course perfectly adapted to the environment. If your group has to balance wildly on stones between the lava, your opponents can swim through it and try to push your heroes into it (perhaps stipulates that contact with lava is not instant death but in any case leaves severe permanent burns)
3. Build in mechanics to show that you are in a living body. The pumping of blood can be heard at any time. Let random events occur that have to do with internal processes.
(E.g. Bad air that pulls through the corridors and suddenly forces your heroes to go to the highest possible place in the room in order not to suffocate.
Titanic healing: The walls and floors are made of a hard flesh. When foreign blood splatters on this surface, it grows rapidly. So when blood runs down the leg of one of your heroes, a layer of flesh suddenly forms around our hero's foot and holds it tight
Traps that tear open the wall and spatter boiling blood on your heroes.)
