November Prompts and Goals Moving Forward
Added 2019-11-06 15:59:44 +0000 UTCHappy November! Hope you got your Christmas decorations out. But even if you don't, let's talk about a few things.
First of all, it's time to get those new patron prompts sent in to me. I'm going to hold off on the Jaina dominatrix story that won the last poll for a while so I can catch up on some backlogged projects, including Patreon benefits for all you lovely sponsors. So get me those ideas pronto.
Second, I want to talk about something that's been on my mind lately. When I first started writing smut two years ago, it was with the intention of eventually building myself up to earn a living just like many of the other writers I looked up to in the community had successfully done. And when I first started taking commissions and opened this Patreon earlier this year, I was super pumped to finally be making money doing something I was so passionate about. I knew it would take time to build up a clientele base, but all big things start small.
However, in the last two months, I've realized some of the downsides that come with writing for pay. While I enjoy providing a service and making money, I no longer feel that earning cash through smut writing is really something I want to make a top goal. And while I do plan to still make myself available for commissions in the future, I want to do so more for people who are fans of my work rather than people who are just looking for a smut writer, literally any smut writer, to write an idea because waitlists for other authors are too long. That's not the sort of writer I want to be and, rather than push myself because it "pays the bills," I'd rather spend my energy on fics that are fun, not profitable.
Basically this means moving away from writing for money to my preferred approach of writing for fans. I love providing content and entertainment for people who like and comment on my stuff, and getting that sort of positive feedback is way, way more gratifying to me than receiving a Paypal transfer. I want to spend more time on stories that I'm passionate about writing and you're passionate about reading.
I've already started taking commissions again in the past month, but this time I'm not shy about saying no to an idea that doesn't interest me. If you're a Varmint fan and we share similar interests (whether it be certain characters, fandoms, themes, et cetera) then chances are high I'll take your commission if you approach me. Because at the end of the day, I love making an idea come alive.
Making money through writing isn't the dream; making money through writing fics that excite me is the dream. This may cost me some revenue going forward, but that's a trade-off I'm willing to make.
And with that said, back to work! I've got a new T&K chapter coming out in a few days, and the train doesn't stop there! Stay good, amigos.
