The "suki", "daisuki", and "ai shiteru" differences really do match up more to what we experience in America with "like", "really like", and "love" culturally. But, I think Americans are more prone to seeing people say "love" in movies and shows when in reality, high school kids still say "I like you" when confessing to each other or "I like him" when talking about their crush, same as Japan. Because of the media difference, I think translators are often pressured to "read between the lines" on if someone is using "suki" to mean like or love. Which is dumb, you can just say "like" in the translation and it is absolutely relatable to an American audience. It's funny because you see the arguments in fan translations when the translator choses to choose "like" for a scene and people blame them for "mistranslating" it.
