i think Mahito went crazy after he hit his head with that stone, because right after he does that is when the heron talks for the first time, and then everything turns crazy. If you watch it again, nothing strange happens until Mahito hits his head. Btw i was confused about why it’s called The Boy and the Heron when their interaction is not really the center of the movie, but it seems the Japanese title "Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka" is directly translated as “How Should They Live.” I think it can be interpreted as “How can I live?” referring to how Mahito could continue living after he lost his mother. It seems like it’s based on the books "The Boy and the Blue Heron", a children’s tale about teaching kids how to deal with feelings, and "How Do You Live?", about a boy who has just lost his father and must learn how to live. Also, there are 13 blocks representing the 13 Ghibli movies directed by Miyazaki, symbolizing his work to create a fantasy world aimed at promoting peace. He fails to find a successor to continue the world he built, yet still inspires others to create their own worlds on their own terms, even if they are not entirely free from malice. The fantasy world of this movie feels like a mix of all miyazaki movies. The perfect paradise doesnt exist because humans exist with the duality of good and evil. It looks like this is Miyazaki’s final goodbye, with him being represented by the Tower Master his talent given by the universe (the stone) and his “children” unwilling to follow in his footsteps to continue building new worlds. The parakeets could represent the people at Studio Ghibli who wanted him to retire and leave world-building to them, or they could just be fascist parakeets, and the King Parakeet would be Adolf, tbh.
