2025-07-09 09:49:01 +0000 UTCIn anime, you’ll sometimes see a minor sitting in a bar or izakaya, sipping something suspicious — and then going out of their way to insist it’s not alcohol. (Which, of course, usually means it totally is.) Japanese broadcast rules and youth protection laws don’t allow showing minors smoking, drinking, or doing drugs — unless it’s clearly portrayed as harmful or part of a cautionary story. So anime often skirts the line by making things ambiguous, or just flat-out denying it with a wink: “It’s not a cigarette. It just looks, burns, and smokes like one.” So yeah, technically she’s just munching on a cocoa cigarette (カカオシガレット)… but you know — wink wink.
