I'm not sure who Hayato likes now, but he definitely had feelings for Haruno in the past. It would explain a lot. Hayato, Haruno and Yukino were close friends due to their parents being close. But right now they seem very awkward together. S1E9, Haruno said, "Yukino wouldn't be chosen again", implying that someone turned her down once in the past. It was probably Hayato who turned her down and it probably ruined their relationship. That's why Hayato's distancing himself from girls. He thinks him choosing one person would ruin their group friendship. It also explains Yukino wanting to copy and supposedly exceed Haruno. She thinks the qualities she lacks is what made the difference. Haruno is disenchanted with the concept of "genuine" relationships. I'm not sure if her disenchantment comes before or after Hayato turning Yukino down, but that certainly solidified her belief. To her, if their friendship was "genuine", a rejection shouldn't be able to break it. But it did.

2025-03-12 05:10:35 +0000 UTCIt's more so that if Hayam's friends knew which path he chose they'd all default to that to stay with Hayama and the group instead of making their own decision. That's why he wasn't disclosing which option he chose, and why he told Hiki that relationships don't start over when you are separated (next grade, off to college). Hayama is confident that he can maintain his friendships even if his friends are in a different class. He is letting his friends decide their academic path, instead of letting them think it's a choice between continued friendship or not (no decision at all).

2025-03-11 20:37:27 +0000 UTCHayama’s friend group and by extension Hayama is probably one of my favorite side arcs to see develop in Oregairu. Between Hayama’s vulnerability with Hikki, confiding with him where he feels he can’t do that anywhere else is the realest shit I’ve seen. Plus seeing Yumiko, and Yaoi lover girl confide with the service club about how bleak the end of highschool/prep for college feels for their friend group and how they want to salvage any bit of it in the future hits home. It’s been inferred already that Hayama and Yukino’s relationship is mainly back in elementary school and middle school where even though they were close familial wise, he didn’t step in or help her whenever the girls bullied her. At least that’s the guilt I’ve seen him hung over. As far as who he likes it’s most likely Yukino’s older sister who is out of reach both in personality for Hayama and probably age gap. The tell for that one is in the episode where Hikki calls Hayama to the coffee shop and he says something like “she doesn’t take do this type of stuff in people she isn’t interested in” Also if it wasn’t already stated but I’m pretty sure Tobe is Iroha’s brother hence why you see them interacting but I don’t think the anime outright says it. Overall Oregairu is one of my favorite melodramatic romcom series & im glad yall are enjoying it so far
