Oregairu Master List
Comments
"In "Oregairu," Hachiman Hikigaya's primary problem is a deep-seated social anxiety and a pessimistic outlook on life, stemming from past bullying experiences which led him to isolate himself and develop a cynical view of relationships, believing that genuine connections are impossible and that people always have ulterior motives, causing him to actively avoid social interaction and often resort to self-deprecating behavior to push people away. " Found this online so hopefully it helps in understanding why the teacher and the girls in the club worry about him and the way he handles things.

2025-02-22 16:56:01 +0000 UTCI see him having that narcissistic side of him, but I also think is a facade to cover his own insecurity. Most of his pointviews on relationships that are superficial are based on how a lot of people downplays him, affecting how he sees himself. So having a coping mechanism like trying to rationalize everything to protect himself is an effective way to redirect those emotional damages for the moment. Cause behind all those comments there are actions like becoming a sacrifice, he chooses to be that because if he's damaged is irrelevant, he even says at the beggining of the s2 "See this is how a world where nobody gets hurt is made", is a total coping cause he's somebody. There are other examples of how he sees himself and his actions as irrelevant cause he doesn't matter at the end in his current state.

2025-02-22 05:55:58 +0000 UTCI agree with you that it won't be good for him if he continues down the same path. But he doesn't have low self-esteem. He's actually rather narcissistic, saying stuff like "I like that part of me" and stuff. And deep down, he even thinks he's better than the rest of the class who spends their youths on romance and friendship, which he dismisses as vanity and superficiality. The problem is his self-consciousness. He's too conscious of himself that he always criticizes himself. To him, if someone does something for him, there must be a reason behind it. It's never "because they like him", "because they care about him", etc. He's too harsh on himself. He thinks he's a loner, when he's practically surrounded by people. Hikigaya is smart. Really smart. The high school he goes to is one of the top schools academically, and he ranks pretty high every exam. When it comes to liberal arts (especially Japanese) he always places third, right after Yukinoshita (1st place) and Hayama (2nd place). Other students don't pay much attention to him because they don't know. And Hikigaya's too self-critical to brag about it and too narcissistic to show his need for attention. That's why Hiratsuka the teacher feels so sorry for him. She teaches Japanese at school so she knows he's talented. As his homeroom teacher, she also knows his tendency to belittle himself to reconcile the gap between his pride and his experiences of failure. She thinks if Hikigaya doesn't address this issue now, it will hurt him greatly in the future. The thing is, he's smart enough to know that he's got an issue. Last episode he said: "While I said that, I realized something. this was illogical rationalizing. It was the deception I hated the most in the world." He keeps avoiding addressing his issue, even at the cost of contradicting himself. Why? We don't know yet for sure. I guess we'll find out.

2025-02-22 05:30:32 +0000 UTCI doesn't matter if 8man is used to his methods. It's about what those methods do in the long term to his own mental health. A loner kid with low self-esteem, and without proper guidance is a timebomb of problems for himself and maybe for others aswell.

2025-02-20 18:55:16 +0000 UTCi think the tone just changed drastically from s1 to s2. s1 had alot of romcom moments and the artstyle made it more comedic. Now its alot more melodramatic and somber which confuses ppl how this escalated so fast. But I would think of it like a build up from the previous season as you mentioned. Yukinos always disliked his way of doing things but in s1 her contempt was covered by verbal abuse that almost became a comedic banter between the two when she was actually very opposed to his way of life.

2025-02-20 16:41:11 +0000 UTCThere's a lot of subtext to this arc that season 1 sets up. I for sure didn't get it the first time without having it explained to me

2025-02-20 16:05:12 +0000 UTCAhhh ‘misunderstandings and doubletalking the series’ back at its finest. Yeah this series creates a lot of headaches and confusion with the viewer trying to figure out what the main characters are thinking
