If I recall correctly they make you feel happy and content, and feed you good tasting fruit which doesn't have any nutritional value, so you eventually just starve to death without pain, before they eat you. Not really a bad way to go.

He just happens to look badass and say dramatic shit which kazuma digs cause it feeds his fantasy of being a main character.
