The entire ending sequence in this episode is the type of stuff that only specific anime can only hit. ITS ALSO HELLA FRUSTRATING THEY DIDN'T LINK UP AT THAT MOMENT BUT OKAY, SUSPENSE. Glad you guys enjoyed that one!

You can see hints here and there from previous episodes like the ruined flag of San Magnolia, as well as the fallen statue and signs. And that field of Lycoris radiata? The same field Spearhead had previously passed by during episode 9. So in a way, everything has somewhat come full circle. 86 symbolism for you.
