2024-02-29 03:25:51 +0000 UTCThe way I see it, Subaru loved his dad and wanted to be just like him. Hearing people say that he truly is his dad’s kid made him happy BUT once he started to not be the best at everything he continued to think that everyone was still comparing him to his dad. He felt like he had big shoes to fill because his dad is an absolute chad. In reality though, nobody actually saw him as another Kenichi, it was all just in his head. Everyone saw him as Subaru, but he stressed himself out thinking that he needed to be like his dad because he thought that people were always comparing him or saying that he is just like his dad when they weren’t. Which is why in the talk with his dad he realizes that and says that EVERYONE has always seen him as just Subaru(not just the people from the world he got transported to). Subaru’s mom says a very nice quote, “Its ok to want to become someone while trying to become yourself.” When you’re a kid you look up to people and you’re on a journey to find who you are; like what you like, what u dont like, things you are good at, things you arent good at, etc. Yes this is good. Something you will see later on, but is never firmly said, is that these trials strengthen and are meant to make you a better person. To improve yourself basically.

2024-02-13 19:00:56 +0000 UTCNow going back to season 1, it all makes his actions make so much sense. He's always been so down on himself. But coming to a new world he thought he could put on a new mask and be a new person, but the cruelties of this world kicked him back down to reality. He can't run away from his problems: himself. His downward spiral just resurfaced all his issues that he thought he could ignore and forced him to confront them. It makes his "annoying" personality so sad to see cos it IS all a mask to hide his insecurities and true feelings about himself. Go back to the Rem confession episode (episode 18) and his venting about how much he hates himself and has always known how pathetic he is hits different. This inferiority complex and desperate need to be special and needed is deep rooted from early childhood. You understand why he wants to be like his dad and looks up to him. But it is unhealthy on your mental health to place expectations on yourself like that.

2024-02-13 16:15:12 +0000 UTCIn the novels, Subaru does think of his parents pretty frequently before this point. He actually think about them almost immediately, as early as the first chapter I’m pretty sure. It is just hard to adapt a character’s inner monologue. He’d think about them briefly before repressing it. Even among all the trauma he experienced, the way he left his mom and dad before never seeing them again is his biggest regret.
