It's mostly some minor editing changes, a couple of reanimated fights and *one* extra scene right at the very end... which ended up being the opening scene of S2 anyway, so you're not missing anything. The reanimation of the Subaru/Julius fight is AFAIK the most substantial change. The Wilhelm/Theresia romance was super weird to me. Like, the show has a few Weird Thoughts about women from time to time, but this was particularly bad because it feels so incongruous in this context? Okay, you want to add an emotional dimension to this extended action sequence, give it some pathos, punch it up. That makes sense. And Wilhelm is a good character to focus on because I do like watching him, he seems like a cool dude, a good mentor, understanding and empathetic without being enabling. Present Wilhelm, at least: Flashback Wilhelm seems like kind of an ass. But then even if we ignore the like the weird thematics, the romance is kind of emotionally incoherent, we get very little insight into what's going on in Theresia's head, the refrain about the flowers doesn't hit as hard as I think it should- it feels like it's *off tempo*, if that makes sense? Or like a poem where someone's flubbed the rhyme scheme. I did assume, and I guess PyroPhoenix has confirmed, that it was something that got garbled by the translation from page to screen, which is a shame.

2024-01-09 23:52:16 +0000 UTCI can see why people would take episode 18s “I love Emilia” to basically mean he could never love rem because he loves Emilia. But pretty much anytime after that point it’s not the case. I mean even from just the anime, promising to keep her by his side after we’ve gotten so much emphasis on how heavy promises are in this universe. The way he holds her and allows her to be that close to him. I too hold my close friends like that and touch foreheads/noses while getting emotional. Either way both girls are loved and deserve to be happy.

2024-01-09 19:27:22 +0000 UTCI love Crusch response to Subaru after he says the #1 and #2 thing 😂 she basically says “now now, I respect u but I dont see u like a woman would see a man she loves so relax.” She admits there were a few times her heart was moved toward him but she never actually fell in love with Subaru. O boy here we go again, childish Subaru being upset at Julius even though he was trying to teach him a lesson.

2024-01-09 19:13:18 +0000 UTCThe thing with Theresia, Wilhelm’s wife. She was a naturally gifted swordswoman but she never wanted to wield a sword UNTIL she met wilhelm. She saw that he was wielding a sword to protect others and it made her be like “ok this isnt so bad.” He basically gave her a reason to wield the sword and become the master swordsman. Later when Wilhelm finds out that she is the master swordsman, he thought she was looking down on him every time they spoke but then he realized the sadness in her eyes. He said something like “you’re too beautiful to wield a sword” (dont remember the exact words he said lol). He didnt mean that in a sexist way, he meant it as in like, he didnt want her to have to go to battle and someday end up dying. He promised he would defeat her and make her put away the sword so she will become his wife and he would take on that responsibility of being master swordsman. I also am not sure if he rlly remembered her or not. He might have just found some hint in his house that told him he had a wife. Once he defeated the whale, looking toward the scenery it kind of looked (to me at least) like all the memories of her were flowing back into him which therefore made him scream out “I love you.”

2024-01-09 19:03:17 +0000 UTCNovels make it clear that he has romantic feelings for Rem throughout this part of the story. It is definitely more understated in the anime, but I believe that’s because they are building to it in the future. You don’t have access to Subaru’s monologue in the anime as it is in the novels, much harder to make the two love stories work in one season when compared to 6+ novels. To make the wife proposal work at this moment they’d had to add a lot of his internal monologue and feelings about Rem into the anime earlier, and I don’t think there’s good places for it. Whereas in the novels it fits in quite well. But yeah, no reason to feel bad for Rem, her love is not unrequited at all.

But it becomes very clear through Subarus actions how he feels about Rem from just the anime. But from the LN it obviously goes further in depth. From episode 18 until now things change. He may have said he loved Emilia to Rem but by the time this episode ends there’s clearly another shift and Subaru quickly realized he has deep feelings for her and Emilia. Won’t get into spoilers but there’s a shift in Subarus mindset of his priorities from this point forward that shows that change.
