I wanna kill chibi poufs but also lowkey wanna squish them lol Honestly, I love Youpi and Knuckles fight so much. From the moment Knuckle is introduced to us, he's already completely set apart from anyone in this arc. He's a surprisingly highly emotionally sensitive guy with a very open mind about his way of judging the people or creatures he meets. We learn here that he was indeed (like his first impression would presume) a delinquent type of kid and was therefore often rejected by a lot of people. This type of life led him to have more compassion for the misfits and abandoned, which explains why he tells Killua and Gon during their first real talk, that he refuses to downright categorize the Chimera Ants as monsters. Still, true to his character, he then tells the boys something along the lines of "In order to really get to know someone, you must first have an exchange of fists.". He finally gets to fight against Youpi and that's where it gets amazing. When first introduced, Youpi is immediately presented as a "no-thought head empty" character, he never says a lot, doesn't overexpress any type of emotion, and his first reflex when he sees his enemies during the invasion is to cease all thoughts and act as a shield. There is a popular analysis on the 3 royal guards and how they all defend and value different aspects of the King (Pouf-the King's body, Pitou-the King's emotions and desires, Pouf-the King's status and role). I really recommend Aleczandxr's videos on the subject if you're interested in a more in-depth analysis on their characters (after you're done with the arc ofc). Anyway, everything was set in a way that Youpi would be the LAST ant to actually connect in some way with our humans (he doesn't even have human genes! Surely he couldn't possibly grasp any type of emotion RigHT ?!). Well, no. Because just like Knuckles philosophy says, one good exchange of fists let him experience a fascinating evolution which was perfectly summarized by the narrator: "Youpi lost his ability to see things in a simple manner". He gained a sense of self (his physical metamorphosis), but also a sense of others (finally seeing other beings as equals), coupled with conflicting emotions such as rage and admiration and even a pretty philosphical questioning on his very role as a royal guard. In short, he became more "human" (putting these quotes because it goes deeper than that but I can't say anything without spoiling), and as soon as Knuckles notices all that, he no longer sees him as an enemy. Now, whether we think he was right or not about seeing Youpi as "not a bad guy" is an interesting conversation, but it's important to remember that Knuckle's perspective comes from a lense that's completely separate from the "fighting for humanity" type. In a way, Knuckles is the most selfish compassionate person lol but again, without spoiling, not seeing the Human-Ants conflict as a Good-Bad conflict might not be completely stupid on his part. Sorry for the long post and thank you for the reaction!!
