You guys were absolutely correct, the civilians were attacking the tall heteromorph woman because of how she looked. The sub translation was off but it was correct in the dub. Edit - Oh and just to help a bit hopefully, Lady nuh-Gaunt👍

So, characters like the woman Deku saved, Spinner, Tokoyami, Ashido, Koda, Shoji would fall under that category. The topic is explored more in the spin-off manga Vigilantes.
