they say dirt, but they probably mean the clay used in japanese sword and knife tempering to change the speed of the quench, which effects the way the metals crystalline lattice sets. if youve ever seen a real, hand forged and tempered japanese sword, the wiggly line on it was made this way. it follows the pattern and thickness of the clay drawn onto the blade and set to dry before heating to temp and quenching. im sure theres easy to find youtube videos where you can watch how the clay patterns are drawn!
