Episode 8 Reaction / Uncut

Chainsaw Man Master List

Chainsaw Man S1E8 Premium Release!

Comments

Well it does matter in the overall arc of Denji's character theme

KIMI

I mean they're more than likely only covering until chapter 38 so with the pace they've been going (roughly 3 chapters an episode) everything will fit in and flow smoothly

KIMI

Japan always seems to straddle the line with this kind of content so maybe I'm used to thinking nothing comes of it most of the time but I do no care for 'fanservice' over the top horny stuff. For this series, I think CM does it in a more realistic/grounded way and though I personally wouldn't advocate it, I think being in a world/profession where the next day you could die a gruesome death would change how those in it would operate.

Vextipher

It definitely straddles a line, but it lacks a lot of shounen tropes and just the general tone of the show and adult themes which are absent from the majority of shounen. There's been more screen time on relationships in 8 episodes than in thousands of episodes of popular shounen. A short jog on google shows that a pretty sizable portion of fans consider it a seinen aimed at a shounen audience. Denji has that shounen MC feel, for sure- huge appetite, hard-headed, never quits, not too bright, etc. Not that it has to fit in one box or the other, it's amazing as it is.

Pepperoni Pony .

Daniel I can understand that and agree, there. I think we mostly see things the same and I got a slightly incorrect impression of your response. Still, it's not unreasonable or biased for them to react in the way they did. They were uncomfortable and should have been. I wouldn't characterize that as a "bias" as that has negative connotations here. As you said our experience with anime justifies our worrying about how sex and situations with minors will be handled. I mean look at the fan response. So much of it was "yeah go get her Denji" which is the opposite of the intended response to that scene (I mean the writer deliberately fronts that scene by telling us exactly how old Denji is). Considering how most shows handle these issues, it's not the girls' fault that they have to worry about what the show might do there. So many other shows that are fan favorites would have been terrible there. And so many people in the comments and other reactors predictably cheered the whole thing on until the last moment. I mean people were making up ignorant info about Japan's minor laws in order to defend the whole thing as "no big deal." Actually people are still doing that even after the show had Himeno admit the actual laws of the prefecture (for example in Tokyo it's essentially 18).

Nevik

Welp, you said too much now I know how the series ends GG thanks a lot /s.

Vextipher

I mean, a mid 20-year old hitting on a 16-year old is very dubious regardless of what the age of consent is in any country, or show. Japanese culture shouldn't be a standard in any way for this shit also. Saying that though Fujimoto is infinitely better than most authors at avoiding that weird culture, and in Himeno's case i think it has more to do with her bad drinking habits and since nothing happened it's kinda trivial in the manga

Takezo

Yea, but I'm concerned as to how they'll pack all that content into 4 more episodes.. Since the trailer showed most of what's at "end stage" of first chapter in the manga, theres SO much stuff they have to pack in 20 minute episodes. I trust MAPPA though, but what made the anime alot more immersive has been the quiet still frames and occasional slow pace, like Aki's morning routine or the chat Denji had with Kimeno last episode. The next 4 episodes will have to be full throttle if they want to cover everything

Takezo

It’s shounen. Shounen isn’t the content of the series but the demographic that the series is catered/marketed to, in this case primarily teen boys.

Dooly

Anime-only here on CSM and I -think- I know what's going on, but I'm not sure. Won't share cause I don't wanna spoil myself or anyone else, but it mostly came out of being spoiled on the name of one of the devils in the opening. If I'm right, or close, it goes to show that even the smallest of seemingly inconsequential spoilers can clue someone in on the narrative. If the author is doing what I think they're doing it's masterclass, though. Really smart storytelling. And correct me if I'm wrong, but even though this was in SJ I believe CSM is widely regarded as a Seinen? I know Denji is technically a shounen, but not every story with a teenage boy protag is a shounen. One thing some of the best mangaka do is make the reader uncomfortable, or feel some kind of specific way, just so they can make them feel something else more strongly down the road. Life is... messy. Goofy. Awkward. Tons of things I'd love to forget about growing up XD But I kinda like the awkwardness in Denji and the general uncomfiness of imperfect people being imperfect with eachother. Lends an authenticity that shounen generally (but not all) lack, imo. Great reaction as always!

Got damn

Solebat

Denji being taken advantage of is definitely a reoccuring theme.

mundanelotus

That's not what i mean nevik, i mean it would be seen as something to build the characters, and make you feel something. Incest, death, torture and the like are shown in abundance in lots of shows, topics far worse than what you're talking about, we don't blink an eye because its not egregious to make people feel unconfortable is my point, but in anime, due to its tropes, its hard to discern. Take Jaraiya in naruto, or sanji in One piece, great characters, yet authors still inject the looney tunes level of horniness or fetish into said characters, you have others, this is not that. This is not Redo of the healer, if it was live action, it would be taken as part of the narrative to be digested not a weird thing the author injected for no reason

DANIEL PEEDAH

In live action, no one would care about an adult trying to sleep with a drunk minor that they carried home? In what world? I don't even understand people dying on this hill. Especially since the scene was written intending to be uncomfortable.

Nevik

Im not talking to u CJ lol. Im talking to the ppl in general that think like Mr. Osenbei LMAO. Ur fine, i get u

Alex cleveland

Im not saying they shouldn't be uncomfortable, I totally understand Sam, Morgan, and Dani's take! However, theres definitely a bigger picture for this certain type of storytelling. I think anime/live action/movies that do this exact same thing should be talked about being uncomfortable, like GOT, The Boys, Mushoku Tensei, and this show. Not just anime, but all shows have these real life scenarios of forbidden sexual desires that bring up interesting opinions and takes from different people.

Alex cleveland

Ay I mean, reactors take things differently, they’re deffo letting their biases in anime show though, because in live action no one would give af

DANIEL PEEDAH

s a r c a s m

CJ

u should be uncomfortable if a 16 year old and a mid 20 year old that r both under the influents or incapacitated is try to smash each other lmao. YALL R TRIPPING LMAO.

Alex cleveland

I think CSM's sexual scenes isnt like some dumb fanservice, but actually using these sensual moments as a plot device for Denji. The show is doing this to make us views unconformable, which is obviously the point. The show isn't pulling a MHA where random ass and boobs r in ur MF face lmao. I think thats the running theme for CSM, ppl taking advantage of u base off ur background or how u were built by ur environment. Leading the show to make Denji easily controlled, abused in different ways, and manipulated by little sexual acts, cause thats what attracts Denji, is affection.😭 This show is brutal with the storytelling. Top tier show!

Alex cleveland

LEGIT lol

Alex cleveland

This is the episode that got me to finally read it. I wanted to try going one season w/o starting the manga but I started after watching this and now I'm caught up LOL

Rosinante

I completely agree. They need to stop watching shounen if a possible non-consensual sex scene involving a minor and an adult makes them uncomfortable.

CJ

Stop watching shounen if animated ecchi scenes are too uncomfortable? Weird... might as well you tell them to stop watching anime in general because Shounen usually has the least Ecchi content out of all the genres.

Desto Samuels

But y'all need to learn to relax, maybe you should stop watching shounen if animated ecchi is too uncomfortable for you?

Mr. Smee

It only escalates from here. As many of us manga readers say, this is where Chainsaw Man really begins.
