Crystal Heart Hanjo + making-of

And here it is – as promised – the next artwork featuring the dearest and most beautiful Hanjo! 💛 (°◡°♡)

I have to admit, I’m actually really proud of this piece. I rarely feel that way about my art and usually find parts I don’t like… but this time, I love almost every bit of it! 🙈

Kito pointed out that it doesn’t quite reach its full potential because the contrasts are a bit too soft. He suggested making the floor black, which might have looked better visually – maybe even a reflective black floor would have been an interesting choice. But somehow, it just didn’t feel right. From the beginning, I had the final result in mind exactly as it turned out. (That’s actually one of the ways I judge whether a piece is successful or not – if it looks the way I originally envisioned it. XD)

The idea was to depict Hanjo in his “craft” – dancing and performing – in a scene that could take place on stage. At the same time, I wanted to express something about his character. The ruby (or red crystal?) heart was meant to stand out almost aggressively against the cool, water-like ethereal tones. It symbolizes Hanjo’s heart (of course XD), as well as his openness and trust toward most people. But that also makes him vulnerable.

The red color and the shards represent life and a kind of raw, unfiltered truth – in the sense of:

“I open myself up to you, but everything I show you is precious, fragile, and part of my life. You can see my heart as it truly is… but please handle it with care!”

I think the image is pretty straightforward – not some big, genius “hidden” symbolism. XD But that wasn’t the goal. I just wanted to create an artwork that captures Hanjo’s delicate personality. 💛

Next up is the NSFW sketch where Gogo serves Derek coffee. XD And before the month ends, there will be another smutty poll! 😱 Both will be out before Wednesday because that’s when I’m heading to the Leipzig Book Fair! This year, I want to keep you updated on what we’re up to and how things are going. :D Luckily, we now have the cool chat feature for that!

By the way, I turned 40 today! 🎉 I’ve been doing this job for 20 (!) years now – and I hope I can keep doing it for at least another 20, finish b&b properly, and start a new series. That would be amazing!

Und hier kommt – wie versprochen – das nächste Artwork mit dem liebsten und schönsten Hanjo! 💛 (°◡°♡)

Ich muss ehrlich zugeben, dass ich auf dieses Bild schon ein bisschen sehr stolz bin. Normalerweise finde ich immer Stellen, die mir nicht gefallen, aber dieses Mal mag ich das Bild fast durch und durch! 🙈

Kito meinte, dass es sein volles Potenzial nicht ganz entfaltet, weil die Kontraste etwas zu sanft sind, und schlug vor, den Boden schwarz zu machen. Vielleicht hätte das optisch sogar besser ausgesehen – ein schwarzer, vielleicht sogar spiegelnder Boden hätte definitiv seinen Reiz gehabt. Aber irgendwie fühlte es sich einfach nicht richtig an. Ich hatte das Endergebnis von Anfang an genau so vor Augen, wie es schließlich geworden ist. (Das ist übrigens einer der Gründe, warum ich ein Bild als gelungen oder misslungen empfinde – ob es so aussieht, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. XD)

Die Idee war, Hanjo bei seinem „Handwerk“ – dem Tanz und der Performance – darzustellen, in einer Szene, die so auch auf einer Bühne stattfinden könnte. Gleichzeitig wollte ich damit etwas über seinen Charakter erzählen. Das Herz aus Rubin (oder rotem Kristall… gibt es überhaupt rote Kristalle? XD) sollte im Kontrast zu den kühlen, wasserartig-ätherischen Farben fast schon brutal herausstechen. Es symbolisiert natürlich Hanjos Herz und seine Offenheit und sein Vertrauen gegenüber den meisten Menschen. Doch genau das macht ihn auch verletzlich.

Die rote Farbe und die Splitter stehen für das Leben und eine Art rohe, ungeschönte Wahrheit – im Sinne von:

“Ich öffne mich dir, aber alles, was ich dir zeige, ist wertvoll, zerbrechlich und ein Teil meines Lebens. Du darfst mein Herz so sehen, wie es ist… aber bitte geh vorsichtig damit um!”

Ich glaube, das Bild ist ziemlich leicht zu lesen – keine große, geniale „verschlüsselte“ Kunst. XD Aber das war auch nicht mein Ziel. Ich wollte einfach nur ein Bild zeichnen, das Hanjos feinen Charakter auf den Punkt bringt. 💛

Als Nächstes kommt dann der NSFW-Sketch, in dem Gogo Derek Kaffee serviert. XD Und bevor der Monat endet, gibt’s noch eine weitere smutty Umfrage! 😱 Beides kommt noch vor Mittwoch, denn dann geht’s zur Leipziger Buchmesse! Ich möchte euch dieses Jahr ein bisschen auf dem Laufenden halten, was wir dort machen und wie alles abläuft. :D Zum Glück haben wir jetzt die coole Chat-Funktion dafür!

Übrigens: Heute bin ich 40 geworden! 🎉 Ich mache diesen Job nun seit 20 (!) Jahren – und hoffe, dass ich ihn noch mindestens 20 weitere machen kann, b&b harmonisch abschließen und noch eine neue Serie anfangen kann. Das wäre toll!
