🆕 Translator++ OCR Tool with JCap

When doing proofreading and testing, I usually open Translator++ side by side with the game to view and test the translation directly in-game.

But sometimes, there are texts that don’t show up in the translation—they remain in the original language. Normally, I copy the text and search for it using Translator++'s search feature. The problem is: there's no easy way to copy text from the game into the clipboard. Typing a short word or phrase as a keyword is fine, but when it involves kanji I don't know how to write or read… that becomes a real problem.

So for a long time, I dreamed of having an OCR tool that could capture part of the game screen and copy the text directly to the clipboard for use in Translator++.

This has been a long-delayed plan, but thanks to the advancements in AI, I finally made it happen.

🈶️ JCap

JCap is an OCR application I created using Python, powered by Manga-OCR.
It combines screen area capture and OCR into one command-line tool, making it easy to integrate into any application—including Translator++.

🔧 Installing JCap on Translator++

First, install the "JCap" addon through the Addon Installer.

Then restart Translator++.

▶️ Activating JCap

Once JCap is installed, you’ll see its icon in the Home menu.

Click the icon to activate the tool. The first time you activate the OCR tool, you will be guided through the installation of JCap, It's automatic.

Once it’s active, pressing F9 will enter capture mode.

In capture mode, just drag your mouse (left-click) over the area you want to capture.
The recognized text will be copied to your clipboard automatically.

Voila! You can now use the clipboard text with Translator++'s search or any other feature.

Thanks again for your continued support.
I hope this feature helps you work faster and more comfortably.

Happy translating,

Great info! I actually didn’t know the Snipping Tool could do that. It’s been ages since I last used the built-in Windows tools. It’s convenient that it comes pre-installed on your system. That said, I’m still seeing shortcomings when it comes to detecting vertical text, especially in right-to-left orientations. Still, it’s nice to have an alternative.

I have found the snipping tool included in windows 11 to be better than manga ocr. Just click the screenshot key and drag over the area you want snipping and take the screenshot, open the notification that appears from doing that, then click detect text. Then either copy all text or select with your mouse.
