Coming back to re-watch this and to suggest that if you guys get a hankering for more 2D/3D space blends, I recommend Don Bluth's Titan AE. It's not a musical, but it has amazing music tracks, is criminally underrated for the same reason Treasure Planet is, and actually came out *before* Treasure Planet and Atlantis did.

2025-10-07 16:36:01 +0000 UTCIf I had to defend the Red Laser part... In the original Treasure Island, we have Silver's crew pulling a big mutiny on Silver. Around this time in the early 2000s, Disney was very... sphincter-tight when it came to keeping movies a certain length. They still are, but depending, I feel like there's a few movies where they're a bit more at ease with it (Marvel movies are the most immediate example I can think of.) But for Treasure Planet, that moment felt like something where they on the planning stage went "we gotta do it this way, because we won't have time for something else." But that's about the only reason I can think of, that this part was a bit more sloppy. It could have been triggered elsewhere instead of them walking right in through the door, like if they pulled a certain bit of treasure (make it a tribute to Aladdin or something), or something like that. Sorry for the ramble, I have a similar mindset when it comes to analyzing things like that XD

2025-09-18 08:17:27 +0000 UTCLove this movie so much, God I always forget how good the animation is in this movie tho. Like fuck. Also you are right, the space port moon is easily one of the coolest world building concepts ever. I think you guys already said you would be doing prince of egypt at some point? But just in case you didn't I would recommend it wholeheartedly again. The music lives rent free in my head. Prince of egypt is to me what this movie is to Mortius, some very specific scenes in it that I a) always cry at, and b) impacted alot of who I am as an adult.

2025-08-14 01:18:53 +0000 UTCOMG Casper! Sebastian's Skatteøen was peak childhood for me! If you'll excuse me, I will now spend the rest of my day singing a patter song naming all of the cheeses I want more than women. "Ost, jeg vil ha' ost, jeg må ha' oooosssttt!"

2025-07-19 15:34:19 +0000 UTCSomething that I think goes understated, but you two sort of hit on while talking about the climax. I'm talking about the part where you discussed how you thought Silver was going to stick to the treasure and basically die with it because he couldn't stop chasing a dream. I think it's super interesting, and also very intentional, that this option WAS available to Silver. If he'd chosen to stick to his dream despite the losses, he'd not only be like Flint, but he'd also be just like Jim's dad. You get the impression Jim's dad was also chasing a dream and gave up him and his mother in the process. But Silver didn't do that. He was a bigger man and in the end he stuck to family and companionship over a lifelong obsession.

2025-07-19 03:43:40 +0000 UTCI've never realized how much of a sci fi pirate Silver is. He's got a peg leg (metal leg), a hook (metal arm), a missing eye (metal eye) and a parrot (Morph).

2025-07-09 21:16:31 +0000 UTCI got very confused for a second when Casper brought up Emma Thompson was in the live action Cruella, because I thought he meant she was live action Cruella and was confusing her for Glenn Close. But nope, my brain just forgot there are two live action franchises based on 101 Dalmatians with very famous British people. In more related news, this really is a great movie. I actually specifically remember really wanting the McDonald's toys for this movie. I think I did have the Jim one with his board, but I was also four when it came out so it's a little fuzzy if I owned it or if that was just the one I really really wanted.

2025-07-08 14:15:53 +0000 UTCIt actually makes total sense to me to leave someone on board of the ship while the rest of the crew is on the planet. I agree, that they probably don't have to worry about outside forces coming in. Even though, while that is highly improbable, it's still something I would be surprised a seasoned Captain like Silver would blatantly ignore. The ship is their only way off the planet! I also agree, that he probably chose Scroop to stay on the ship, cause he wanted him far from his boy. BUT I think there is a third reason: The others could double back to the ship and leave the planet to come back at a later time, leaving the pirates stranded and reasonably for dead. In that case, Scroop is an excellent choice as a last resort one-man stand to defend the escape possibility!

2025-07-08 11:20:33 +0000 UTCUsually I focus more on Caspers side of the screen, since he watches the things for the first time. And to be fair, his reaction was adorable. He seemed so mesmerized by this masterpiece - like a little kid walking into an old school candy store! But I'm so glad I made the decission to primarily watch Mortius this time. His giddyness and mouthing of certain parts was just the most adorable shit!!! Also: baller tie!

2025-07-08 11:16:21 +0000 UTCAt 1:38:08 you said the captions were wrong, but they weren't. I could see mishearing it as "passionate", but B.E.N. 100% said "ba(t)chin' it" as in 'living as a bachelor'.

2025-07-08 06:33:42 +0000 UTC2/2 - The scene of Silver reaching for Jim clinging to the wall has the same distance-reach problem as Hercules when he's reaching into the spirit soul soup lmao - There's a cut scene that was partially animated but unfinished. It's set at the start of the movie where Jim comes across a local kid by his home trying to fix a beginner solar sufer. Jim helps him out and fixes it without any issue just for the sake of helping him, but then the kid's parent/guardian/older sibling (I can't remember exactly) comes to find him and gives Jim the dirtiest look because of Jim's reputation with local police. It was a great showcase that Jim /does/ have a good heart, is smart as hell, and quick to adapt but ultimately they got to showcase it in other ways throughout the film and the scene was cut. - Lots of people talk about it but I'll bring it up too. Jim's costuming throughout the film changes to reflect his growth as a character. Started with dark clothes, heavy jacket. Then when allowed to go on the trip, his clothes are a little brighter. Then after all his interactions with Silver, he loses the jacket and is more open, then the white military suit at the end (that I will hammer home all day long NEEDS A BELT so he's not just a walking white blob). It's a nice little touch that folks pick up and may not have the words to describe it. What most people DON'T comment on is Jim's growth: when he greets Sarah at the spaceport at the end, he's as tall as her now for the first time, showing literal growth. - If you're interested in another great song from the film, I'd highly recommend the Spanish (might be Portuguese? Unsure) credit song, "Estrellas Que me Dan Vida" by Beto Cueves

2025-07-08 06:15:57 +0000 UTCFUN TIDBITS AND LORE to add to the experience and some questions answered from your resident Treasure Planet Life Long Hyperfixated Nerd: - The 2D/3D animation they built around the 30/70 rule. 70% traditional, 30% new tech, which applied to the visual aesthetics and tech in-universe as well - The ladder aliens at the port that gave Jim and Delbert directions to the ship are cameos of Clements and Musker - The movie Disney wanted Clements and Musker to complete first was Hercules before greenlighting Treasure Planet - SO ABOUT JIM'S DAD. He was definitely apathetic and mostly absent. This is paraphrased from the artbook: His name is Leland and he married Sarah when they were very young, moved to Montressor when it was a bustling mining planet. But gradually the work dried up and it became more of a ghost town with people just passing through to go other places, and people who lived there too poor to move. Leland gave up on the whole thing and just dipped, leaving Sarah and Jim there. So Sarah turned their home into the Benbow Inn to make ends meet since they couldn't really leave. An unfortunately very real and relatable story for anyone Jim's age even without the space sci-fi setting. - Emma Thompson actually helped a lot with Amelia's dialogue! She would approach the crew to offer suggestions of ways Amelia would say things differently/more accurately to the dialect and alluded time period. - NEAT ANIMATION TIDBIT: Glenn Keane and John Ripa (Silver and Jim's key animators respectively) did a thing for the first time where they pushed their desks together facing each other. One would act out a little bit of a scene, then animate that bit, then the other would get up and act out the next bit of the scene then animate that. They went back and forth throughout most of the scenes together for the movie. Just a cute thing. - The movie bombed because of many factors. Including (but not limited to): Disney spending all their marketing budget on Lilo and Stitch released earlier in the year, and Harry Potter sequel released in the same month as Treasure Planet. It was up against some tough competition and Disney kneecapped it. - Also! Home on the Range was Disney's last 2D animated film of this era, another failure at the box office and the nail in the coffin until they tried one last time with Princess and the Frog. - The alien going "we're going to need a bigger boat" - cute Jaws reference 1/2

2025-07-08 06:15:50 +0000 UTCIf I remember correctly, another factor of this movie flopping in the box office was that it released around the same time as The Matrix so it had little to no chance of competing.

2025-07-08 05:35:19 +0000 UTCSo to add on to the discussion of how they are all breathing in space they do answer it just not in the movie. While no sequel movie or book was released there was a video game that followed Jim's time in the Royal Navy. This game went into a little more detail on the world. Basically they are in a layer of space called the Etherium. The Etherium is a layer of space that contains breathable air. Beneath this layer is a void that resembles traditional space. Figured I would mention this for anyone who might have been curious. Also in case anyone might be curious the game is called Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon.

2025-07-08 03:55:02 +0000 UTCI threw out my plan for the evening as soon as I saw this was up. Mortius! It's happening! Everyone remain ffffking calm! <3 I was 12 when this treasure of cinema came out. *Hip gives out* Treasure Planet and Prince of Egypt are tied for my favorite films ever created and I think it'll remain the same till my last day on earth. People thought I was super religious for a while because of how often I watched PoE, and now there's a /musical/ to go with it, aaa! I know Amelia's actress best as Professor Trelawney, but she also got to play Mrs. Lovett in a stage performance of Sweeney Todd! Phenomenal. I'm not surprised that PotC is based off a theme park ride. Look at Ride the Cyclone, that thing is real and people have died on it. Disney could have made so many millions on Treasure Planet as a franchise if they'd /Advertised It Appropriately, As It Deserved./ I hate that TP's creators had to suffer and labor so much, and Disney didn't see the literal treasure trove of beautiful animation and storytelling that they slept on. Like fffking Smaug. When it comes to the large, red security line, I will showcase the Eurylochus Clause: Hunger for something lowers their thought processing function and has an adverse affect on the logic center of the brain. In essence, gold make smart pirate dumb if they're been searching for it long enough. Aww, the credit song wasn't even listened to. Shame on you guys (I'm kidding, but yeah, it's really good).
