Syril's shame and guilt is what led him to attack Cassian. It's understandable that in that moment of rage his emotions and reason were clouded. Let's just keep in mind though ultimately, in the moment of truth when Syril had the gun pointed at Cassian right before he got shot, Syril was lowering his weapon.
