There was one thing that was left out of the flashback to Kate and Paul's backstory in the episode. The comics showed a little more to it. Their powers are, through no fault of their own, the result of a supernatural curse. For context, an ancestor of theirs named Fung Cha was a warlord who lived during the time of medieval China. Fung Cha killed the evil emperor who was in power at the time. As he died, the emperor bestowed a mystical curse on Fung Cha: "The seventh generation after Cha's seventh grandchild will be burdened with a family too large to care for...and it will drive him mad." And as we saw, well...Kate and Paul's father was the unfortunate poor sap who got the short end of the stick and inherited said curse. Kate and Paul's mother died when they were born, which is why we don't see her in the flashback.
