SHŌGUN 1x8 - Reaction

Yep and instead of seeing that for what it is, a well-written 3-dimensional characterization, the culture war drones at Netflix just wanted to wash it away. Look how that worked out. Another classic show/IP made for their completely fictional "modern audiences" and in the process it's totally ruined. We all just want entertainment that's smart and thoughtfully made. THAT is really what appeals to ALL different audiences... quality.

The thing with Sokka's character is that his misogyny is part of his character arc and how much he grows to not have that mindset anymore. He looked down on the Kyoshi Warriors initially but then apologized and humbled himself once he realized they were good at what they do and could learn from them

Exactly. Henry Cavill needed to practically beg to be on that show despite him being WAY TOO big of a star for that. Netfilx and their showrunners totally messed that up. Had a guy who, like you said, not only really wanted to be a part of it but also knew more about the lore than most of those writers. Hopefully the big studios learn to stop hiring people like this who don't deserve the gig. If Disney, Netflix, Amazon and the rest want to milk these great franchises at least they can stay true to the original creator's vision and get people to work on it who are totally passionate and respectfully about the source material. So many examples too. Rings of Power, Wheel of Time, the live action Avatar which I knew prior to starting it that it was going to be rough since the original show creators left due to "creative differences" and even said it was one of the most depressing things they've had to do in their professional careers. All because some mentally unstable writers thought they knew better, like re-writing Sokka so he's not "misogynist" anymore when in reality he was just a well-written 15 yo who made fun of his sister a couple times in the first few episodes of the original but his character arc showed how loyal and honorable he was and how much he truly loved his sister and would actually die to defend her... but no, to Netflix showrunners "he's misogynist"... It's sad. No idea of what real characters look like, well-rounded and flawed yet overcome their shortcomings to become better.

Large egos and one of them got the GOT job just because his dad was a shareholder at HBO. He had no previous tv writing experience either. I think what also helps is having the original creator be a producer or have some kind of involvement in the process. In the case of the Witcher, they had Henry cavill who knew that world like the back of his hand. Even though he isn't the original author, the showrunner could've utilized his knowledge to their benefit

Also from everything I heard their egos were just too big and they wouldn't accept any help from HBO who wanted to bring in more writers and producers and even get GRRM to advise them more for the post-book seasons. But like a lot of these "writers" at Amazon/Netflix etc who just take on existing and beloved IPs, they thought they knew better and could improve upon the original artist's work. They wanted full control and the full credit for the show so they declined any help even though they were clearly way over their heads but it backfired in the end because the entire industry saw them for what they were. HBO screwed up by not DEMANDING they take on help with writing and producing but I also get it because at the time the show was massively popular and to make a huge shift in power like that would be scary because if the remaining seasons got messed up (like they did anyway) HBO probably figured they didn't want it to look like it was their fault for interfering with the showrunners too much. I wish Netflix would learn this after The Witcher and the live action Avatar:TLA or Amazon with Rings of Power.

Yup they were! I think Disney saw how bad the final GOT season was doing in terms of ratings and rescinded the offer😂 D&D doing star wars was the only reason they were in a rush to finish GOT. HBO even offered them more money to do more seasons so that the story could end on a good and satisfying note and they said no. D&D fumbled their bag so hard. That's why in 2019 during the final season, news came out that they signed with Netflix to produce shows/movies for then and people were like "🤔🤔wait a minute... how are they going to do that AND star wars?" Then after the final season was over, another article came out that explained how Disney cancelled the star wars trilogy but due to them fumbling that Disney bag, that's when they signed with Netflix lmao so that's when things started making sense 🤣

Kiwi

Weren't they also supposed to be involved with a Star Wars project aswell that got cancelled? Oh god, please no. My poor franchise has seen enough pain and suffering.

Agreed! As much as I'd enjoy seeing more of the world, I think they did a good job in telling a complete story. I hope they don't plan to "add" to the world if S1 covered all of the book(s). I feel like tv writers should learn from Dan & Dave (GOT) about how not to ruin a beloved series 😂 they signed that 6 figure Netflix deal in 2019 and I've yet to hear anything about any new shows or movies they've written🤣

Kiwi

Ok I really thought I heard it was only 1 season prior to it being released. The story (no spoilers) ended in a way I felt was satisfying and complete. I'm excited to see more of the show but yeah I agree with you as well. I'm concerned if they try to "add to" the existing story it won't have the same impact. Reminds me a bit of GOT after they didn't have GRRM's books to literally just copy/paste. Let's hope for the best though.

It was originally supposed to be a single season but then after the show ended, news came out that they're planning subsequent seasons. Personally, they shouldn't have announced it was going to be a single season then reverse that decision. It's really just because the series gained so much popularity and now they're riding that high. I think they should leave it as-is and not do anymore seasons lol people can appreciate it for what it is

BTW, I assumed that since this is based off of just one novel AND the original 1980 TV miniseries was only 5 episodes that this would be a limited run single season show and even after watching entire season now (3 times!) I thought that was it. BUT apparently it's confirmed to always have been a 3 season show. Which is such great news. I'm usually on top of that kind of news but like I said I assumed too much and my buddy, who's not a TV/Film freak like WE are here, told me about it. Also apparently the 1980 show was good it just wasn't as authentic to Japanese culture as this one is. Obviously, because I mean it was 1980 in America and even having a show like this on primetime was a big cultural step. Beheadings, Japenese culture and the like on TV in 1980 was definitely pushing the boundaries A LOT. This show being produced by Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) himself added a lot more attention to detail and authenticity.
