2024-06-08 20:40:01 +0000 UTCI was a 3rd grade teacher when Avatar ended. I bought all the DVDs and showed them to my students during lunchtime. We even watched the bonus features. At first, I had only a handful of students willing to skip their lunchtime socializing, but that number grew and quite quickly my whole class ate in our classroom watching an episode a day. We would discuss it afterward and it changed them. They learned empathy, compassion, reflection, internal and external conflicts. Some of them learned that the bad their parents were doing was not their fault--such a lesson for such a young age. This was the sweetest class I ever taught and changed classroom dynamics. It was also the only class I ever taught where EVERY student passed every state assessment that year, because they all felt safe to learn. The principal asked me my secret but would not believe me when I said it was from watching and discussing Avatar. The next year, the whole school was banned from watching shows during lunch.

2024-06-08 19:04:43 +0000 UTCAs for the heavy themes throughout the series- the creators embraced them wholeheartedly knowing they were writing a children's show. DiMartino, one of the writer/creators says that he thinks about this quote from another author, Philip Pullman, quite often: "There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children's book." They mention that in order to write a compelling story, they would have to respect that children can handle the emotion and complicated issues they would present.
