2024-04-16 13:53:06 +0000 UTCThere was no indication that the survivors perished. And even if that was an issue, him joining them would’ve increased their likelihood of survival because he could’ve waterbent to get them somewhere safe faster or something.

2024-04-15 16:22:17 +0000 UTCA volcanic eruption, especially one that big, has a giant impact on the environment, reducing overall air quality, visibleness, the clouds of ash covering the sun for possibly days, etc. There are some IRL eruptions that were so bad they could be seen from space for days, as well as the aftermath. Even tho Roku's folks were off the island they were far from safe. Not to sound morbid, but a lot of them probably died or suffered from long-term illnesses as a result of inhaling all the toxic gas and ash.

They had no time to grab anything. They would’ve all died on those boats. Saving the island was their best bet at survival.

There is an episode in Legend of Korra that furthers peoples belief of that.
